By now, you have seen the Earth image by the #Artemis crew at least a hundred times. In this annotated version, several #optics effects are highlighted. It also shows how fragile planet #Earth is, with a super thin #atmosphere protecting us from the harsh vacuum of space.
Let's protect it.

Don't forget to write 2025 as
1³+2³+3³+4³+5³+6³+7³+8³+9³
(next opportunity is only in 3025)!
(Or, for the #math and #LaTeX lovers:
\begin{equation}
\sum_{n=1}^9 n^3
\end{equation})

On days like these, it is good to put things in perspective. This image - yes, you will need to zoom in - shows the dimensions and distances of the Earth and the #Moon to scale. The furthest point of #Artemis from Earth is indicated, which is approximately 1,000 times further than the #ISS space station when it passes directly overhead.

Data via @frankdeboosere@mastodon-belgium.be

#parallax

Starlink 34343, which experienced - according to #SpaceX - an "anomaly on-orbit" on March 29, is now spinning with a period of about 18.5 seconds based on the time between consecutive flares. Observed Apr02 from Ghent (Belgium) through thin clouds. Video is at double speed. #Starlink satellites do not spin. "Luckily" there are at least 5 (five!) other ones visible, which indeed show stable brightness.

Wees welkom!

Not surprisingly, rich(er) countries dominate the #olympics medal table, clearly seen when plotting the medals per capita vs. #GDP per capita.
Or: the 60% of the world population with GDP below 10k$ can only celebrate 19% of all #medals🏅. #paris2024 #dataviz

Delen, dus! cc @ionica@mathstodon.xyz

@PypeBros@mastodon.social It always holds, for any n! The sum of cubes from 1³ to n³ can be expressed as n²(n+1)²/4. This is the same as (n(n+1)/2)². The sum of the first n positive integers is expressed as n(n+1)/2 (n numbers times the average of first and last, (n+1)/2. So, if you square the last expression, you get the other expression. ☐

Replying to
@knud@mastodon.social @sundogplanets@mastodon.social Isn’t one of the problems (also) that some calculations are done with an apparent size of the orbital reflector of 6 arcseconds, where the optical resolution of the eye is of the order of 30 arcseconds (due to lens abberations and even some diffraction), reducing the retinal impact? (Of course, those reflectors are still wrong for many reasons. Still, the argumentation should be scientifically sound)
