decapsulated and imaged the CPU-TWL, the main chip in the Nintendo DSi

image in near-IR, through-substrate, with a 50x objective

the decapsulation process was a bit haphazard as I don't have access to acids. instead, I heated up the chip to ~500 °C with a hot air station, which let me cut the chip carrier/interposer off from the epoxy mold using an xacto knife. I then had to remove another polymer coating (using the xacto knife, hwile heating it up to 250 °C), which unfortunately led to some scratch marks. the die is also weirdly curved, which led to some issues with keeping the entire thing in focus. but hey, it's something

academic spam really isn't trying anymore lately huh. I just got an email informing me there's a "scopus-indexed journal with a core focus on the Nintedo DSi" (while of course listing their main areas of interest as AI nonsense)

Rejoice, as I've written a writeup on how exactly Emulator Examination breaks your emulators: https://codeberg.org/PoroCYon/emulator-examination/wiki/Home I feel like a diagram might be needed to explain the "eye test" effect better? But also it's past 3 AM here so if people want it, I'll do it tomorrow.

lb ( https://labyrinth.zone/objects/d3f9544c-f87b-4ba8-affc-cadec7da4961 ): it's kind of ridiculous, really

CA AB 1043 etc are valid in relatively small geographic areas, vague enforcement methods (at least when OFCOM in the UK isn't involved), and are so badly drafted I don't believe large parts of it will hold up to legal scrutiny in court

so why are people -- free software maintainers, no less -- complying in advance here?

imagine what the world would look like if Zimmerman never wrote PGP ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crypto_Wars#Personal_computing_era ), people willingly adopted the Clipper chip ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipper_chip ), the VLC team never developed libdvdcss ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libdvdcss ), and so on

if you're going to make a PC compo filler, at least make a färjan instead of letting it be another AI-generated amiga-intro-style thing

the "fork" button on github is entirely broken for me right now. creating a repository on codeberg is giving me a 504 gateway timeout. jfc

@evilpaul_atebit@icosahedron.website it is indeed technically possible, but nobody knows if it's actually happening there are some advertising agencies with "active listening" features, whose existence has been strongly denied until they came to light (see eg https://archive.ph/hLEYY or https://www.404media.co/cmg-cox-media-actually-listening-to-phones-smartspeakers-for-ads-marketing/ ), but there's no known evidence of whatsapp actually analyzing people's chats, while it wouldn't be that difficult to discover (by just RE'ing the app, instead of looking at ad payloads in the case of CMG & active listening)

Replying to
@halcy@icosahedron.website another fun bonus detail is that it's possible to disable an affine background for one bus cycle when its internal UV coord gets updated, and then reenable it the next cycle. if you time it correctly (I haven't figured out the exact timing yet), it's possible to always keep the background layer as visible, but have it repeat the previous pixel due to the UV getting stuck. there's also one cycle during hblank where it updates the Y-axis UV instead, making it repeat whole scanlines instead of pixels

Replying to
@halcy@icosahedron.website it's because of a regular fetch not having already happened, and tile/map index/data latches being reset to 0 as a consequence it also upsets the horizontal-pixel-inside-a-tile counter, but in a way I don't fully understand. the T/Y graphic is declared as this in the demo: https://codeberg.org/PoroCYon/emulator-examination/src/branch/main/arm9/source/main_ntr.c#L37-L46 , but it gets displayed correctly 'somehow'. it's not just by rotating the columns around, some get duplicated and others don't get shown at all

@jan_ hi, that's right. I'd like to have sizes of at least 10cm in both X and Y, Z doesn't have to be much (it'll just be for focusing), and precision doesn't have to be much better than 1mm. though, preferably nothing too big when packaged, because I don't have that much space left in my luggage. thanks!
