I like making things and witnessing other people make things. Myself I do #EmbeddedDev and #Programming alongside a fair amount of writing and TTRPG design. Dipping my toes into pixel art and eurorack modular synthesis.

I am actively trying to curate a feed of people who make things, build worlds, and spread peace.

We fantasize about the LLM having tells because it's easier to think about than the actual truths: The average sum of human writing is pretty fucking dismal, and;The only way to tell an LLM output from a human output is to see if it's internally consistent and has a point. And that latter is a problem: it means you actually do have to read the slop. Worse, you have to be able to read critically, which isn't exactly something you can assume the average reader is capable of.

This, by the way, is what the search people should have been building instead of all that NLP/LLM/Algorithmic "fitness" bullshit. "Give me all instances of an M3 screw in stainless steel with a pan head" is what computers are fucking for.

The librarian rant is loading but like "looking for things" is perahps the most core of all life skills, we should stop trying to pretend like it's a nerdy niche specialty skill to be able to clearly define what you want and look for it. But that would imply any kind of industrial respect for personal agency and taste.

Yeah yeah I know now you're all like "now how am I supposed to teach grandma/little kiddo to understand SELECT * FROM catalog WHERE as a concept?" It's not a hard concept, you might try teaching rather than scolding for not knowing.

@cR0w@infosec.exchange I would have a harder time stealing a password out of a notebook in a locked desk drawer in your secured facility than I would stealing it from your company OnePassword account. And hell, that difficulty only goes up when you factor in remote workers.

#ScribesAndMakers 7/3. We have some new people in the community. Re/Introduce yourself and tell us about your creative work.

I'm a multidisciplinary maker (papercraft and coding mostly, but some electronics, woodworking, and "general handystuff") and a writer (as @zadammac@wandering.shop) specializing in fantasy and sci-fi.

Lately I'm trying hard to "de-hustle" these pursuits so that I can go back to just enjoying them, because I started a new day job that is much more demanding of my time and attention.

@chirpbirb@meow.social no, effective immediately with 2 weeks pay in lieu of notice. They cancelled my access to everything while I was on the call with them. In Canada a 90 day period after hiring comes standard with the ability to terminate the employee without cause. I firmly believe this was a purely financial decision on the part of the company. I'm not perfect, but no complaints about my work were raised previously so I can't see any other explanation.

#ScribesAndMakers 6/8. What's something you consider creative that other people might not?

I mean, just name an activity, really.

A real good example is a lot of hobbies people see as consumptive - gaming, watching (TV/Movies/Streams), reading. It can be purely consumptive if you do it unimaginatively, I guess.

But you can get damned creative if you try to on purpose.

Now of course, the real question is: Patch, you got lucky that in the two weeks since the last backup you had made effectively no edits to the wiki, should you consider backing up more frequently. And the answer is always "It depends"

You see a lot of memes and comics these days about "Oh, I'll cook at home to save money on takeout, oh no, I spent more ingredienting up than I did on the takeout" and that statement is actually only true if you're going plate for plate. If you use up that whole set of ingredients you absolutely get that plate cost down considerably further than the restaurant ever can. Of course, you're paying in your time.

#ScribesAndMakers #TTMD @ElyseMGrasso@wandering.shop

My understanding is that the Elderkin Chronicles has a magic system baked into it. Would you call the style of magic more hard magic or soft magic? Do you have a preference one way or the other?

#ScribesAndMakers 6 Ghoti (fish) is a word created to demonstrate the odd pronunciation variations in the English language. Create a word of your own or share one you've created.

Wisteria is full of very fancy sounding, but stupid, invented terms. The Gnostic Asceity is a favourite.

In published media though, I came up with the term "teleproprioception" to describe a facet of Vidcund's unusual abilities, though it's not really a complete label for what he's doing. The term came from his ability to sense where all his "other bodies" were, but it of course is inadequate to describe his ability to run his "mind" as a distributed phenomenon across many physical bodies.

If that's even how his mind actually works, which the series then goes on to further explore.

Absolutely thrilled to share this week's blog post with y'all. Today it's about more than a victorious fist-pump about having "finished" a stage of a project.

Today, I'm pleased to announce more or less the entire future roadmap for getting The Rise into print.

Sometimes, the CreativeCommons licenses are problematic.

Currently sat here trying to figure out if using a CSV I found as the basis for a component in a game I'm working on means I cannot charge for the game because the CSV is CC-BY-SA licensed.

I have this thing I do where I oscilate from a sort of medievalist hyperfocus to a sort of science fiction hyperfocus.

When I'm in my medievalist moods I take better care of myself but get much less done.

When I'm hyperfocusing on space-trucker-mode I have a tendency to not take care of myself at all but I get a LOT of work done.

Last boost: at a point in the past I contemplated writing myself a tool called NeoAlexandria that had some libsci features but which was mostly just going to be a wrapper for managing large corpuses of torrented data.

The idea being that I and others could distribute the software and the library metadata and just keep a big sync'd pool of mutual backing-up.

@n_dimension@infosec.exchange It's repeated attempts reach specific endpoints. I don't have a good log aggregation/parser on this host (yet: I guess that's Monday's project now) but it mostly seems to be trying to find the edit histories of specific pages that don't exist anymore that were created by spam bots over a few months beginning last october. I cleaned up the spam but the continued traffic has convinced me something is looking for C2 instructions or something that were embedded in the spam. Since it can't find what it's looking for it's just hammering over and over.

In a way, because I've both (a) built a pretty good library overall and (b) specifically splashed out on two or three larger titles in June right before I got laid off, I am uniquely equipped in that regard.

Like especially concerning my retro backlog, I could concievably game deeply into my 40s before I'd run out of things to do.

Though I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a liiiiiiiitttttttle FOMO over Owlcat's Expanse title.

I'm not even sure that I want to use Anubis to solve this problem. Proof of work is not really my favourite computational solution for... any problem, honestly. I get the logic of it, I get why it punishes clients in a scalar way, but still. I also had some pride in the idea that my most important sites were effectively JS-free and now I'm talking about making a change that would make JS mandatory to access anything in my hive. But I can't keep getting hit by these guys

@gary_alderson@infosec.exchange Yeah, there's a daily job that runs a restic backup against most of the parts of that host that actually matter. But for reasons that rhyme with "environment built out of a stack of hacks taller than Shaq himself", that doesn't protect the contents of the docker volumes that host the databases that back the wikis. The compromise there is to just take a new backup of the entire DB once a month and throw the oldest out. Keeps my cloud storage costs reasonable and, for the amount of "change per day" these things experience, it's probably sufficient.

Join me while I'm building the largest factory I've ever built, which will also, funnily enough, produce almost nothing. It's all very Satisfactory.

A page I am adding to my website requires what is effectively recycled Jekyll logic but a de-novo HTML element to get it to look right, and I'm wondering if I shouldn't just knuckle under and do the full site redesign while I'm in here.

@munin@infosec.exchange I too love these ideas but they don't solve the specific problem I'm having as "short of blocking a CIDR range so wide I'd certainly screw real people, I can't drop all this traffic based on the information it presents so now I need to make everyone burn hashes I don't actually need just to prove they avtually want to talk to me" Which... now that I think about it still probably won't solve my real problem.
