Open Sci Monitoring Initiative
The Open Science Monitoring Initiative (OSMI) aims to encourage the adoption of #OpenScience monitoring principles and to promote their practical implementation.
📊 How does PLOS' Open Science Indicators stack up against the OSMI Principles?
Iain Hrynaszkiewicz and Cameron Neylon share a self-assessment of the PLOS OSI dashboard — one of the first real-world applications of the Principles of Open Science Monitoring — reflecting on openness, responsible use, scalability, and measuring what matters.
This kind of community-oriented self-assessment is exactly what open science monitoring needs more of.

Science Europe's latest position statement on Connecting Open Science and Research Assessment Reform recognises #OSMI as one of the key frameworks for comparing #openscience progress across institutional, national, and international levels. 🙌
#opensciencemonitoring matters – and we're glad the call is getting louder. 📊

🔍 How do we know if #OpenScience is truly working?
A new article by Nabila Salisu & Julián D. Cortés (OSMI WG1) shows why monitoring must go beyond easy metrics and focus on equity, inclusion, and real societal impact — using the UNESCO Open Science pillars as a global framework.
🌍 The Principles of Open Science Monitoring are now speaking more languages!
Following the recent presentation of the OSMI infographic, we're pleased to announce it is now available in 9 languages: Arabic, Finnish, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, Slovenian, and Spanish.

Launched in July 2025, the Principles of Open Science Monitoring are gaining traction worldwide. A survey of early adopters reveals how universities, research centres, and policymakers are adopting three core pillars:
✅ Relevance & impact
✅ Transparency & reproducibility
✅ Self-assessment & responsible use
Key findings:
🔹Open-source tools & datasets ensure transparency
🔹User-friendly interfaces improve accessibility
🔹Principles integrated into institutional policies
