OA Datenpraxis
Do publishers deliver the metadata they promise in transformative agreements?
Our colleague Sophia Dörner @subugoe@openbiblio.social analyzed @crossref@mastodon.online metadata for journal articles covered by transformative agreements with German research institutions:
The analysis shows that metadata completeness varies across publishers, and contractual provisions don't lead to higher coverage. There are substantial gaps, for example with regards to affiliation and funding information.
The authors of this report, @cameronneylon@hcommons.social and @MsPhelps@akademienl.social , use open datasets to model future publishing costs at the consortial level:
"It is our belief that there is substantial value in making this financial data more public and transparent, as it can support comparison, discussion and critique. [Where] data is shared it helps us to build a picture of global investments and plan as a community for the future." (p. 40)
Later today, we are presenting our poster "Recording Publication Costs at Research Performing Organizations in Germany" at the #openCost conference.
If you want to learn more about how German research organisations collect data on publication costs, visit us during the poster session or take a look at our published results:

This blog post discusses recent events that reveal fragilities of the open research information ecosystem:

"The most valuable work of the coming years will not be building, and investing in the curation of ever-larger mirrors of the research system, but finishing the foundational tasks we already know are necessary. That means complete, genuinely open metadata in @crossref@mastodon.online and @datacite@openbiblio.social , including affiliations with @ResearchOrgs@mastodon.social IDs."

This white paper from @digitalscience@sciencemastodon.com conceptualizes the market for research information in terms of processes of structuring and opening information.
The author argues that these dynamics generate an "innovation annulus" that "is not a pathology but a functional and permanent feature of the knowledge ecosystem." (p. 16)
He also discusses how an open core of research information could be balanced with economic incentives for innovation.
Cost Transparency Doesn’t Conflict with Library Values. It Can Help Us Defend Them
