I know that a lot of people have left the bird app in favour of Threads, but I'm still struggling to agree with (what I see as) jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. @thetyee@mstdn.ca has now been blocked on Threads and Instagram because of Meta's tantrum over Bill C-18. I hope I don't need to explain how ridiculous this situation is.

The current obsession on AI's supposed "existential risks" has been a real head-scratcher for me, but it's made more sense once I reframed it as Western men's fear response to facing extraction and exploitation... Baby's First Colonialism, if you will.
In this little blog post I suggest that Western men are grappling with their first experience of colonialism in the only way they know how – assuming they're the first ones here!

I don't know a lot about recommender systems, but from what I read out of Twitter's recent blog and codebase (https://blog.twitter.com/engineering/en_us/topics/open-source/2023/twitter-recommendation-algorithm) the most relevant chunk is a click-through rate predictor model (theirs is a MaskNet implementation https://github.com/twitter/the-algorithm-ml/blob/main/projects/home/recap/README.md), trained on non-identifying user data (https://github.com/twitter/the-algorithm-ml/blob/main/projects/home/recap/FEATURES.md).

Substra (https://github.com/Substra/substra) is designed as a framework-agnostic library for federated learning (FL). FL is mainly being explored for finance and healthcare/biomedical research, but I think there could be even more applications!

The Air France website broke on me while checking in for my flight, and it won't let me continue the check-in now. Then I had the joy of being berated by someone on their support team who refused to listen to me, insulted me, made me feel stupid for even seeking help, and then hung up on me because "this conversation isn't going anywhere".
I can't even submit a complaint because the service is "temporarily unavailable"...
