@Research_FTW@sciences.social Well done to Carol. But I think there is more to this. Farage became a household name because of BBC. They promoted him and his ideas.

@gwynnion@mastodon.social if they could use Claude to delete 25000 lines of code per day and still have a functional service, then that would be something to discuss.

@davidgerard@circumstances.run @prietschka@mastodon.social Twitter struggled to make money after decades of presence and a lot of users. So I don’t expect bluesky will do any better any time soon. At the moment it will be monetised it will start losing users. Unless they only use it as a honeypot for AI training

@readbeanicecream@mastodon.social Well, even though you are right the biggest tech corporations in the world rely on the fact that a website is not a text file. Otherwise they would not be able to track you and show you adds.

@lordof1 A shoe shop requires some manufacturing capacity unless the shoes are imported. In really bad times you will only see services shops, such as the hair parlours, nail parlours and tatoo shops.

@Mastokarl @noplasticshower @davidaugust I know plenty of old people that would be goners in Greece if it was not for the public health system, with all its issues and delays it has kept them alive. These are poor people living with pensions 200-300 euro per month.

@mihamarkic @faliate @davidaugust Eye tests are free in Scotland and NHS advises people to have one every 2 years. Similarly dentist check ups cost less than 10£ with an X-ray and polish and they are also scheduled at least once per year via NHS. You can of course go in at any time if there is an emergency

@johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz Afaik each country in the west had a few set of these clocks and they are all connected. There is a method of averaging the time between them on national and international level so the reference time is common. But I am not sure what happens if one goes offline, can time sync fall back to another country, in the US case potentially Canada? I am pretty sure some computers could do it but for industrial equipment this may not be possible. Plus there is no alternative in the US for the radio towers. In Europe we have the German and the British towers.

@johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz Are there any organisations at state level that can provide a similar service? In Europe each state has its own standards institution and they are in sync with each other for redundancy.

@stevenaleach@sigmoid.social @f_beaudet@cosocial.ca I really believe that 99.99% of people do not realise they can use libreoffice or even an older version of ms office and not need a subscription at all. But all major companies are, going for the subscription based model these days, they don’t want us to own things, they want us to rent them from them. Perpetual growth hack etc etc

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @robertklaschka@mastodon.online @pluralistic@mamot.fr It’s a bleak political landscape. Greens are the most likeable but Polanski has misled people more than once and he did scam people in the past as well by pretending to be a hypnotist. He has also misled people more recently by claiming to be a Red Cross ambassador etc. of course all of these are minor failings compared to Torries level of sleaze, or Reform, or even SNP. I think Labour is not as much corrupt as incompetent. So there you go a perfect storm.

@ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk These type of changes can not proceed unless widespread digital fingerprinting is available, usually by handing over some sort of id. When that happens then the platforms will be forced to request users to re authenticate regularly. Then we will have full end to end tacking for everyone. A perfect surveillance society.

@stevenaleach@sigmoid.social @f_beaudet@cosocial.ca Well most Linux distributions are subscription free even though some are pushing their users to opt in to some kind of subscription such as the Ubuntu extended security updates. But I think nothing can be compared with the absolute shitshow that is Microsoft.
