Worth Reading - AI has made work almost endless, but it doesn't have to be this way

e aren't disciplined enough to stop ourselves, especially when the culture rewards those who don't. In my opinion, that's what most organizations get wrong: they talk about not burning out, not working too many hours, and maybe they even understand the negative impacts on work quality that come from overwork.  But who gets the kudos during team meetings or all-hands meetings? It's not the ones setting boundaries to protect their mental health. It's the ones who work all the time.

Hate “The Algorithm?” RSS Is One of the Tools You’ve Been Looking For

Since at least the moment Facebook introduced (and apologized for) its News Feed, “the algorithm” has been shorthand for the ways the tech giants control what we see and when we see it. In the age of enshittification, there is a push to reclaim our feeds and networks. Good news: there’s a tool that’s been around for decades that can help wrangle many of your feeds into something manageable: Really Simple Syndication, more commonly known as RSS.

Have We Considered that it's not Remote Work that Causes Mental Health Issues, but a Culture That Makes it Harder?

We could create a workplace where people could work from the coffee shop and interact with other humans in person. Where they didn't spend so much time working that they could use that saved commute time to attend community events. We just don't. Instead, we expect remote workers to be available all the time; we tie them up in meetings for 5-6 hours a day because that's how we "keep an eye" on them, and still expect them to hit all their deliverables.

Discovery Isn't Sequential. So Why Is Your Workflow? - Prosearch

Our profession is redrawing its map as we speak. EDRM 2.0, the first real update to the reference model in over a decade, is in public comment through the end of July, and it is thoughtful work by people who care deeply about this field. But a reference model has one job: documenting the consensus about how the work flows. It can't tell you why the work flows that way. It isn't supposed to.

Worth Reading - The AI Productivity Illusion

The core question in the post above is pretty simple. Generative AI has helped people finish tasks more quickly and probably completed more tasks, at least when their time is not taken up with cleaning up the slop from poorly generated work, but there haven't been any widespread economic productivity gains.  What if we're completing more tasks, but they have no value?

Worth Reading - EDRM Invites Global Community to Shape EDRM 2.0 via Public Comment

Those of you in the eDiscovery arena might already be aware of this new public comment period for the EDRM version 2.0. I took a quick look at it, and the one thing I will say is that I agree that eDiscovery is part of the Information Governance strategy for every firm, so I was glad to see that model as the underlying thread.  It also helps, when thinking about AI, to bring it into the full IG scope rather than considering it only as an eDiscovery problem. The combination of the stigma of calling in the first place, along with a program that doesn't meet the needs, means 97% of people won't bother with it. We should be looking at alternatives, for sure.
