Variant Hunter Ryan Hisner (who first spotted PJ.2.1) highlighted a new sample from New York with the advantageous Spike A475V mutation. As they noted, evolutionary developments like this will accelerate the spread of this variant. https://skyview.social/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbsky.app%2Fprofile%2Fryanhisner.bsky.social%2Fpost%2F3mvtdvjwthc2a&viewtype=tree 🧵

A BlueSky thread by Ryan Hisner on Skyview

One PJ.2.1 from NYC today has A475V, which I expect to be the first in a series of spike mutations we see in PJ.2.1, give the great amount of ACE2 affinity it has to trade off for AB-evading mus. Unclear if A475V will make a huge difference, but at some point it will likely find something that does.

With BlueSky down for 18+ hours (and the issues with its ownership coming into clearer view) and Xitter a toxic hellsite, today is the day to show your appreciation (and if you can, your monetary support) for your Mastodon admins and moderators. Here’s mine:

@aussocialadmin@aus.social

IMO, Mastodon is the only architecture that makes sense for building and maintaining your social media connections in the long-term: decentralised, distributed, moderated by humans, open access and open-source.

There’s no significant jump associated with that takeover in the wastewater signals reported at poops.nz, apart from in Dunedin, Otago. The level there is the highest since August 2025. 🧵

Here's the latest variant picture with a global scope, to late April.
Data sharing has stalled from several countries, so it's hard to draw a global picture.

RE: @DenisCOVIDinfoguy@aus.social

Diphtheria cases have continued to soar in Australia since the figures were taken for this article, now well over 200 reported via NNDSS for 2026.

Note this outbreak started in late 2025, and AFAIK it is not "seasonal", so annual tallies are a somewhat bureaucratic viewpoint.

No sign of a peak in the NT and WA, where very steep growth is continuing.

Here’s the June 2026 update I just sent to my GitHub Sponsors. New this month was the project tracking Ebola in the DRC.
I continued to share results from these projects, here and on other social media platforms

Among Victorian children (0-17), BA.3.2.* was at 41% (n=7), vs 13% among adults (n=1), so a ~3X higher rate among children. That’s in the range seen in other countries/regions – AFAIK everywhere that reports Patient age and where BA.3.2.* is significant. No other Australian state shares Patient age data, but I assume the patterns are very similar. 🧵

BA.3.2.* has been shown to be preferentially infecting children. In the US, this is most apparent in New York (state), which has reported most of the BA.3.2.* samples and also shares Patient age data. Among children (0-17), BA.3.2.* reached 17% (n=22), vs 2% among adults (n=12), so a ~7X higher rate among children. 🧵
