@invadersil was pretty much expecting this, and even more, like in the text entry field. Particularly after the lady who dropped her legal team and pursued action against her insurance company with ChatGPT legal briefs. The insurance company and their lawyers are suing OpenAI for practicing law in the state without a license. Expect a disclaimer on all of them soon that says they’re not intended to be used for any serious purpose ever. I’m expecting many more lawsuits.

@fabio @cstross mmm, yes, I used to have one cable, a lightning cable, and it did everything. Now I have a cupboard full of USB-C cables. Some do 100W, some don’t, some do display port alt mode. Did you know it’s possible to get a USB-C cable that only does USB2? I didn’t, until I only got USB2 speeds on my SSD. Calling USB-C a standard is like calling all 4 legged animals dogs.

@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social I need to leave it on the DC managers desk, with a note, BRB, consolidating power in the racks.

@memoriesin8bit@mastodon.gamedev.place @cstross@wandering.shop Ahh, that takes me back. I can’t quite recall if it was Fedora or something else, where OpenSSH client suddenly developed a dependency on x11-ask-pass. So you’d install SSH on your server and suddenly it was a desktop.

@Firesphere It is actually really simple. I do it all the time, you just need to spend a little time reading and having the ground level understanding and a few years experience to build on. Unfortunately we don't like to pay for people with skills or experience. So we hire cloud enthusiasts with no skills and wonder why our S3 buckets are exposed, or our web front ends are sending credentials in plain text, and we pull every package from the framework repo to display a static page.

@bignose@fosstodon.org @petrillic@hachyderm.io That maintainers are doing a good job is something I'd take issue with.. Pretty much the entire OSS community with a handful of exceptions is people reinventing the wheel, poorly, in the framework/language du jour, without understanding anything about it. Then all of a sudden a large company finds their infrastructure is being rebuilt because OSSs new toy didn't include any allowance for upgrading (see K8s). Why is BTRFS still not complete? etc etc etc

@bignose@fosstodon.org @petrillic@hachyderm.io Uhh, no, I think you're reading my comments wrong. OSS people have not produced world-class software. Companies like Red Hat have produced world class software and paid people to maintain it, and secure it. The Linux Foundation has to pick up the pieces after the OSS community gets bored with maintaining software like OpenSSL. Always need a company around to do the important but boring stuff. Like pay people, to maintain things, so they don't get distracted by new shiny.

@bignose@fosstodon.org @petrillic@hachyderm.io I really think you need to take a hard hard look at the OSS community and wonder why people like Linus and Theo have anger issues. Lots of people writing software, with no clue, then expecting everyone else to adopt it. Ceph is my favourite punching bag for this. Commercial storage array vs Ceph CSA: 4 x 18 (72 total) core CPUs in 2 controllers, 1800+ drives. 128GB RAM per controller. 16 network ports. Ceph: 1 core+1GB RAM per HDD, 1800 HDD = 1800 cores, 1.8TB RAM. Why?

@bignose@fosstodon.org @petrillic@hachyderm.io What fabulous vocabulary you have, a shame you can’t use it to address any of my points. Just handwaving about maybe some of the things that were adapted from BSD might be missed if I tried to go without them.

@petrillic@hachyderm.io There are plenty of fund the maintainers efforts out there, they're called companies. And the moment you put a company in charge of something, they want to make money, so they can fund their maintainers. The moment they start to make money the OSS community declares them to be evil and takes the source code and creates a free version that can't pay the maintainers.

@petrillic@hachyderm.io @bignose@fosstodon.org No one owes anyone anything, correct, which is why after this I'm heading out to dig up a bunch of sand so I can start fabbing my own CPUs. Once that's done, then I’ll hand write my own operating system.

@cstross@wandering.shop @fabio@manganiello.eu And I do get that, but I think this is a case of careful what you wish for. Lots of battery powered electronics now come with a USB-C charge cable that you want to throw in the bin, because it will get mixed up with all your other cables and you will use it and spend 30 minutes wondering why your device is slow/doesn't work. Of particular joy to those performing tech support for parents. Apple tried to stop shipping cables with everything, and people got pissed about that too.
