After years inside datacenters, it’s hard to be afraid of AI killing all humans. I've seen the "secure facility." It's a chain link fence and a guy named Gary. Night shift is usually 10-20 people. Two hundred people could shut a datacenter down with nothing but a Wikipedia article on fiber optics and some enthusiasm. Start swinging and you’ll hit something valuable pretty fast. The "secure cages"? Chain link. The lobby's got badges and mancatchers and a guard who checks your ID like it insulted him. Out back it's a sliding metal door, propped open with a folding chair by whoever's waiting on FedEx. It's not a fortress. It's a strip mall with better cable management.

@JustinDerrick@infosec.exchange There are absolutely datacenters this secure. The ones I've been in personally have been for financial trading. Those followed the security procedures you would expect. Lots of armed guards, entirely inaccessible by the street, two security checks for incoming packages and deliveries on freight elevators. LLM datacenters are not that. They are the cheap design of datacenter, where it's basically as secure as a warehouse.

Someone posts something I wrote to Hacker News. It reaches the front page. And I feel that pull. That specific, stupid hunger to open the comments.

I don’t. Because I’ve been around long enough to know exactly what’s in there. But it’s like standing outside a door while people talk shit about you. Some part of your brain, the same one that will randomly ask “what if this time we touched the stove?”, says “don’t you want to read the mean comments?”

Dear podcast hosts. I have been a loyal #podcast listener since the iPod was a rectangle with a click wheel and ambitions. I sit through the ads. I use the promo codes. I have purchased mattresses and downloaded VPNs. I am doing my part.

So when I say this, know it comes from love. Ad revenue is down and you desperately need more monthly subscribers in order to keep this your full time thing.

You got paid a full time wage to talk into a microphone in your spare bedroom for two hours a week. That’s not a career. That’s a miracle. A beautiful, ridiculous miracle that the universe briefly permitted.

I’m not joining the Patreon. I’m not joining the supporter tier. I follow thirty of you. At $7 a month that’s $210. I’m now getting asked multiple times a week by different shows for somewhere between $5-10 a month.

If the golden age is over, it’s over. I’m sorry. But I’m also tapped out.

Sometimes I’ll be annoyed at my desk job and then I’ll remember some of the apeshit stuff people did to me in service roles. One of the grocery stores I worked at sold very fancy pies that sold out instantly. People would line up for these pies around 4th of July. They were like staples of fancy dinners in the area. So one Saturday morning a random woman came in and told me that she was reserving two pies and handed me a business card. I laughed and said “right that’d be great if we did that” and then threw away her card cause I assumed it was a bit. She also laughed and headed out to her car. Hilarious joke. The next day she came in as I was opening and was like “where are my pies?” I was like “oh you weren’t kidding? Yeah we don’t reserve them for people. First come first serve like all the signs say”. Important context, we have like 6 signs around the store explaining that you cannot reserve pies. We are asked this question….50 times a day. Not only did she yell at me, but then her husband comes in and yells at me.

This is the funniest thing I have ever read. https://theonion.com/at-long-last-infowars-is-ours/

Imagine a roaring arena packed to the rafters with pathological liars. High above you in the nosebleeds are podcasters, screaming that you'll die if you don't buy their skincare products. Below, on the floor, imagine demonic battalions of super-influencers physically forcing people into home fitness devices designed to dismantle their bodies bone by bone and reassemble them into a grotesque statue of yourself. Out of the throngs, an extremely sick looking man approaches you. He puts his hands on your shoulders. He explains that he is your life coach and that you owe him $800.

This morning I was asked “what does magnesium do to you” and I realized I have no idea. So I googled it. Somehow between the AI overview and another snippet overview the page has become completely unresponsive. I can’t scroll or tap anything on this view.

So the design that Google has settled on for their crown jewel product is: first you see an AI summery that is so often wrong that I have to now ask people “did you click on a link or just read the summery” when they tell me they looked something up. Then they kept the old summary answer panel from before. Then you get the ad responses. Then finally actual websites.

The absolute failure of the entire concept of the Metaverse is such a perfect encapsulation of why Meta is a bad company.

The CEO had a terrible idea and none of his sycophants could say no. So $80 billion was wasted for no reason. Nobody was punished for this massive fuck up except normal employees who had nothing to do with it.

I like how short the AI coding revolution was.
3 months ago: “Everyone! Claude Code is great and can do anything you need for $200 a month!”

A week ago: “Looks like they massively increased how many tokens you use. The $200 a month plan is now completely useless and your sessions will get depleted in less than an hour.”

Like wow that subsided price disappeared quickly.

I watch true crime to relax, which is its own problem. But nothing pulls me out of the moment like a detective gravely announcing that the evidence has been “coowaborated.” Sir. There’s a wabbit.

Regardless of where the crime takes place, the detective will gravely announce a murder and then insert a goofy pronounciation of what you’d think is a commonly said word.

At some point all my Macs stopped being able to receive iMessages. They could just send. I tried signing out, nothing. I tried signing out and restarting, nothing. They continued to work on iOS devices, just not the Mac.

Then I removed the email addresses from iMessage and that.....sorta fixed it? Now I get the messages but I get them hours later. Console shows "MessageProtection failed to decrypt with ngm identities - fail to unseal message {error: Error Domain=com.apple.messageprotection Code=5 "(null)", encryptingIdentity: , signingIdentity: }" but the problem is that Apple logging is the worst in the entire world.

Seriously. This is from less than 60 seconds of MacOS logging in Console. What is the point of such a bad logging system? How am I supposed to figure out anything if you push 10,000 logs a minute of just errors?

Bold move considering how bad their shows are. Just a supporting character turning to camera every 5 minutes being like “because we don’t think you were paying attention, here’s another summary of the plot thus far”.

Like Emily in Paris is a beautifully shot show with many episodes. It says nothing, the show is mostly pretty people in nice clothes moving through streets. You don’t even need the dialogue.

@tkissing@mastodon.social Great question! There are a ton of good options. My personal favorite is how Maximum Fun does it. It’s a worker owned collective podcast network that allows one subscription to support multiple shows. Smaller shows get ad spots on more popular shows to get listeners and there is substantial differences between the shows such that listeners to one rarely steals from another. Or be more transparent with what you need and what you lost. If it’s a funding drive with some sort of finite end like NPR does on the radio that makes more sense to me. Explain where the money goes perhaps. Is there staff you want to bring on or something? As it is I don’t know what these podcasts were making or how close they are to what they were doing before. So instead it’s 7-10 times a week “please subscribe there’s all this content behind the paywall”.

@ireneista@adhd.irenes.space No it’s a totally valid point. I have worked quite a bit in credit card processing and payment processing in general so this is definitely a known issue to me where you cannot really have micropayments. I assumed it would work similar to Google Ad Network in that the user would put in €100 or whatever and then a third party using JS or ideally a browser API would allow for a person to pay €.10 or whatever to see a page and then the mediator would initiate a wire transfer when the amount crossed a threshold where it made sense to pay them out.

@mterhar I mean if you use Opus now the $200 a month plan gets you like 45 minutes of work on a fresh session. The whole subreddit is obsessed with it. They announced on the Discord how during “peak hours” token usage will be 2x but it seems like it is just happening all the time now. To be clear I’m fine with it but the sonnet model isn’t good enough to really do substantial work. So the dream of using Claude code to do like hours of work a day for $200 a month is effectively dead.

I’m a little shocked that #germany is requiring workers to get a doctor’s note for any sick leave. It’s such an insanely high barrier for people. I’m sad to see such an important member of the EU go in such an anti-worker direction. I can say as an American who has had jobs with that requirement, the result is “people come into work sick all the time”. Truly the sickest I’ve been in my life have been places that mandate that, to the extent that one of the two that did ended up rolling it back when an intern threw up in a trashcan in front of our largest customer.
