@firebreathingduck@social.vivaldi.net @chartier@toot.cafe You can't put high-speed trains on curvy tracks. Most of the time, they have to be straightened.
Another challenge is that these tracks were built before they used thermite to join the rails. The rails had to be replaced to withstand the stresses.
The CCP just seizes the land required, and when Japan rebuilt after WWII, it was less of a challenge due to all their infrastructure being destroyed

I would have liked to see how they resolved that situation 😆

I've been programming for years (FML, I'm old), to this day, I still don't get why our peers don't take pride in our craft.

@grmpyprogrammer Sure, that's part of it. Quality will bring in more money in the long term.
Just taking an extra step can reduce bugs and improve efficiency. That lowers costs.
Listending to feedback from your customers instead of fighting them also helps

@greenpeace@mastodon.social I'm 100% electric at my house (well, 98% as my wife is waiting for her car lease to end next year). I'll be getting home batteries during my renovation. Some of my GOP peers have been asking me why. Well, I've been telling them my goal is to be the only house on the block with my lights on during a power outage. I frame it as being independent. I tell them I don't know what the price of gas is. They are starting to come around to that idea

@jascha Now with work mandating the use of AI, it's worse for me. I will type out a prompt, and while I'm waiting for it to finish, I'll go on a non-work-related sidequest that has fifty steps. Next thing I know, its two hours later and the agent finished it works an hour and a half ago

@grmpyprogrammer Still not an excuse. We are the ones doing the work, not the boss.
Imagine you need surgery. The Dr says the surgery will take about 4 hours. 4 hours you pay for. You're about to be put under anesthesia when you happen to notice the Dr is spending a long time washing his hands and donning PPE. You yell at the Dr telling them to get a move on and stop wasting time. Is the Dr going to listen to you? No, because it's on them. They own the work, not the hospital.

I love being a loser. I have an EV and charge with solar. Rising oil prices because of the #IranWar haven't really impacted my budget much. Yes, everything else is rising, but fuel is not something I worry about.
When the US starts having shortages like Russia is currently facing, I won't have to wait days in my car, and then fight to the death for fuel.
Be a loser like me

The Ford case is interesting since they just rehired the Sr. engineers without supplementing with JR engineers. That is just a band-aid. When those Sr engineers retire, there still won't be people with that knowledge
I could be wrong. Maybe this will be a wake-up call to mgmt, highlighting the need to address bus-factor

@chartier@toot.cafe TBF, I-95 is 3,000 KM long. That is just one of the many interstates we have. America is big, and building high-speed rail across that many miles is an imminent domain nightmare. Look at all the problems CA have trying to build their high speed train

I'm not someone who likes to post reviews of products or services. I only do it for excptional dis/service.
After all the issues we've been having with Guaranteed Rate, we're moving to a new broker. Instead of needing $80k to close, we only need $17k, plus a deduction of the out-of-pocket costs we paid (appraisal, inspection, architect and building permit fees), bringing the closing cost down to ~$11k.
I let the sunk cost fallacy delay us getting started and getting a better deal.

@zimzat At least with other professions, there are governing bodies that help prevent abuse from managers.
Maybe it was just my upbringing. I was always taught that if you put your name on something, make sure the work you do is the best you can. It reflects on you. Even when I was working shit pay jobs, I took that to heart

Let me see if I can follow the logic here. Graham Platner is accused (not convicted) of SA, which makes him ineligible to run for the Senate, but he is qualified to run for POTUS?
Tomas Paine is rolling in his grave.

Once again, developers are screwing me over. The bank wants $80k to close because they don't believe we only have one home. They keep confusing me with my father.
I should have switched to a different broker sooner
