The portfolio unfolds its strength when it contains artefacts of learning and reflection. Reflection is necessary for the learning process, and it's the portfolio where you can demonstrate, reflect, and visualise that learning.

#Reflection is a cornerstone of #portfolio work. That is acknowledged by all interviewees. The process of learning is more important than the end product for many, and they want to see growth. Prof Dr Mike Altieri from OTH Amberg-Weiden in Germany has a tip for all students, which also applies when they create portfolios for assessment. Listen to it and 30 other tips in the latest episode of our podcast 'Create. Share. Engage.' wherever you listen to audio podcasts or at https://podcast.mahara.org/2018360/episodes/19279909

The AAEEBL Symposium and Annual Meeting that were held in June shone the light on how diverse portfolio practice is. Even within one study programme, portfolios can be used in a myriad of ways. Helen Chen from Stanford University, one of the organisers of the Symposium, highlights the work that Rebecca Thomas and Christa Matlack do at Bucknell University with engineering students. The #portfolio connects your learning that is happening at different stages and in different courses. It provides the possibility to relate learning to each other and to transfer learning from one area into another. Pablo Avila says that LaGuardia Community College uses portfolios so students can make those connections and break free from a transactional view of their courses.

In the episodes of our podcast 'Create. Share. Engage.' interviewees share tips for portfolio creators. One of the themes that can be seen is 'Embracing creativity and risk'. Interviewees encourage learners to embrace creativity, experiment, be brave, and risk to do something different. McKenna Slaughter from University of Central Florida can speak to that as student and also as peer tutor.

"Embrace the messiness" of portfolio work, says Candyce Reynolds. The portfolio is a place of learning that has its ups and downs and takes detours. The AAEEBL Annual Meeting and the AAEEBL Symposium in June were events to learn and share portfolio ideas.

The portfolio can represent you when you are not in the room. Debbie Oesch-Minor, co-organiser of the AAEEBL Annual Meeting, reflected on that comment that Sue Schibeci, Work-Integrated Learning Partner at Macquarie University, made in her session at the AAEEBL Symposium a few weeks ago.

"The age of portfolios is now" says Heather Pate from Edith Cowan University in Western Australia. Portfolios offer rich possibilities for a programmatic approach to learning and assessment. The programmatic approach to learning is about making connections between what you've learned across the entire curriculum rather than looking at courses individually. That's where the portfolio comes in to facilitate this process as Heather Pate and Rebecca Scriven from Edith Cowan University explain in their interview on our podcast 'Create. Share. Engage.'
Listen in to learn how they approach it and what is necessary to make this shift. https://podcast.mahara.org/2018360/episodes/19438987

Implementing portfolios is a must at Edith Cowan University to move from the artefact of learning to evidencing it, i.e. reflect on it and connect it to a student's learning story. Heather Pate and Rebecca Scriven are at the forefront of the shift to a programmatic approach to learning at the university and share what they have learned along the way on our podcast 'Create. Share. Engage.' https://podcast.mahara.org/2018360/episodes/19438987

How do you implement a programmatic approach to learning (or assessment)? It's only possible through the support of the institution's leadership, says Heather Pate from ECU. Champions are important, but they alone would not be able to bring about change in every course and every programme.

The portfolio is the process. Sure, it will have an end product, the page or pages in which you have artefacts and make connections to other parts of your learning journey. But to get there, you need reflection. Reflections make your learning visible and help you tell your learning story.

"ePortfolios become both a mirror of learning and a training ground for resilience," says Molebogeng Thage, a teacher in South Africa. She and her colleague, Amokelo Maweya created a conceptual model that combines technological adaptability, self-directed learning and metacognition, critical digital engagement, and portfolios to support the ability to adapt, recover, and thrive in digital environments.

Replying to
@hannaB@social.vir.group Yes! The process becomes more important than the product and the emphasis is on the learning that the student takes away from the experience rather than reciting facts and figures.
