@moof@cupoftea.social The whole "hurr hurr gibibyte" thing annoys me so much. In any other industry if I tried to redefine the foot as 10 inches for some nonsensical reason, I'd be prosecuted for fraud at best.

Fun fact about cooking, have you ever noticed how a lot of recipes call for a temperature of 350 degrees? Why this number? Before electrically cooked ovens, most recipes called for a "low oven," a "moderate oven," or a "high oven." Low oven would have been warmed by glowing embers, moderate oven would have had wood with obviously visible flames, and high oven would have been throw wood in until you can't stand being within three feet of the cooking surface. When electrically controlled ovens arrived that could be set to precise temperatures, recipes that called for "low oven" got "translated" into 250 degrees Farenheit (121 C), "moderate oven" got "translated" to 350 F (176C), and "high oven" got "translated" to 500F (260C).

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social Florida makes the news often because of their "Sunshine information" law, in which journalists can freely read police files. As soon as the police have gotten involved, everything but the guy's name is public information now. Much of the same nonsense is happening in other states too, but it winds up in a police file after a quick chuckle by the investigating officers, and after the trial, no one thinks of it ever again.

@alice_pea_3526@mastodon.social I think, if you asked me to train an AI tomorrow, I'd pay hordes of high school students $10 a piece for original papers and say it was an educational charity. So long as we avoid AI written papers, we'd get a model with considerably fewer conspiracy theories and less likely to hallucinate. But ai bros aren't going to do this. Because it would cost money.

@boggin@mastodon.scot @MugsysRapSheet@mastodon.social The most famous "circus" music, "The Entrance of the Gladiators," was actually intended as a serious military march. Circuses started using it sarcastically, and now when you hear it you're more likely to think clowns than soldiers.

@pac85@social.treehouse.systems It sounds like a worse version of PCI compliance, where an it technician is certifying that a website is secure enough to take credit cards. The process starts by the site being scanned and then a report being made of everything that could on any way conceivably be used to hack the site. The one time I did it, I remember having to explain with a straight face that no, it's not possible to hack a site through a referenced image.

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social The short version is, a company that makes paperclips for sale tells an AI system to "make as many paperclips as possible." The AI system dismantles the earth making more paperclips, kiling every human that exists. It then waits in the mass of paperclips that used to be the earth for further orders. In other tellings, the AI also invents a space program and continues until the entire universe's mass is paperclips. A programmer made this into a game: https://www.decisionproblem.com/paperclips/index2.html

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social I'm a tomato hater, yeah, but I have noticed that I don't always react to food combinations like I do to the pure thing. I hate tomatoes...unless you add oregano and cheese, which seems to cover up the bitter component enough for me to like the others. I similiarly hate chocolate ... unless you add peanut butter for some reason.

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social I've hit a deer while driving home. It was 2am after a night shift, and the deer darted out in front of the roadand then got stunned by my headlights. I braked, but only managed to slow down to half the speed I was going out when the deer bonked off my hood. It stood up in confusion, and then ran back into the forest. I like to imagine it immediately went to it's deer friends: DEER: "GUYS, GUYS, I JUST RAN INTO A DEMON! IT HAD HORRIBLE GLOWING EYES AND GROWLED AS IT MOVED, AND IT PUSHED ME, BUT I GOT AWAY." Other deer: "Man, you need to stop eating the weird berries."
