@silhouette right?? i usually don't see the "people on mastodon suck" thing but there are a lot of people very detached from reality. it sucks we live in a world where windows is the dominant desktop OS but i still want the people on that OS to be able to send me messages on signal. we have some more important things going on

In the early 2010s I was aware of the sex slang but not the ableist meaning when I asked my drafting instructor, who was paralyzed and used a wheelchair, if I could download and use GIMP for something. Having had never heard of this obscure piece of software, he very understandably was not happy with that!

@AlSweigart@mastodon.social When I started programming as a kid, I was already a Computer User, but I distinctly remember understanding there were more appropriate places for numbers (.ini files? command line flags? those sound hard to set up...) but I was handling so much new complexity already. Editing them at the top was just natural and easy. It didn't seem particularly magical, just an accessible location.

@VA3DSO@mastodon.social Yep， it's a shame how many contexts I've been unable to use GIMP in. I love it for my hobby work, but it's been incompatible with professional and educational contexts just because the authors wanted to name it after a form-fitting full-body sex-torture fuck garment.

@mdiluz I think a problem is that we anthropomorphize all the time. "It decided to rain today", "Electrons want to get rid of excess energy", "Your Wii is not thirsty and does not like orange juice". It usually isn't a problem because people don't usually also seriously ascribe sentience to these things. (And when people do, like with the weather, it's pretty disastrous!)

I want to add that this isn't a grr-never-AI absolutist stance. This is bad for just simple security. Prompt injection isn't a solved thing. We don't sudo curl | sh on anything we care about in the same way we don't give agents sudo access to anything we care about.

@Gargron@mastodon.social I'm basically 'anti-AI', but the term "AI" is about as meaningful as the term "smart" was. It can be arbitrarily broad, to support any "AI is good" argument. Take OCR, audio transcription models, simple classifiers, etc. These are genuinely useful! And SOTA is genuinely better in 2025 than it was in even 2021. They aren't LLMs, but they're neural networks. Anyone can call them "AI" if they want.
