Just a reminder that Lions, Towers & Shields is on spring break! We return in July, proving that we care nothing for your silly holiday norms, and will do as we like.

There's a full season of great movies coming your way, at least one new panelist and some crossover Incomparable Mothership stuff, too.

Femme Fatales Are Usually Smarter (Lions, Towers & Shields 139)

Fritz Lang directed a pair of noirs in the mid-40s, starring Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett and Dan Duryea. The other is Woman in the Window. In Scarlet Street Eddie G. Is a mild-mannered cashier who meets Kitty, a beauty who might not mean him well. And then Dan Duryea gets involved. Like any self-respecting noir classic, this one is nice to look at, and even features twelve paintings created for the film. In real-life, Eddie collected art and Dan Duryea was a nice man.

Tonight we’re making the last episode of the LTS spring season. Never fear the summer season is already in the planning.

Say More. Say It Now. Tell Us Everything! (Lions, Towers & Shields 140)

By request, we take on this late-50s musical, directed by Stanley Donan. Our stars are Fred Astaire, Audrey Hepburn and Kay Thompson. (I’ll have lots to say about Kay.) Revolving, as it does around the fashion industry in Paris, Funny Face is pretty to look at, including many great costumes. It also features songs by the Gershwins and some better ones that are not by them.

We're taking a quick late-season break, because a couple of episodes I'd planned have fallen through. I do have a holiday-adjacent show for you, which IIwill post after US Thanksgiving. Then, perhaps one more before the end of the year. Thanks for sticking with us!

The Incomparable

The Hot Ronald Colman (Lions, Towers & Shields 138)

Someone suggested we honor the films of 1926 — 100 years ago — and so we shall. Beau Geste has been remade often, but here is the original, starring Ronald Colman in his matinee idol period. S recent massive restoration of the film has the film looking great, with lots of footage restored. It’s a silent film, if that affects your interest, but it’s quite compelling.

Thanks to all who listen, and especially those who comment or send notes. We're taking our winter break, but we'll be back in March with many more new old movies.

The Incomparable

Call It A Noirlodrama (Lions, Towers & Shields 135)

The son of a man convicted of murder faces bullying, then suspicion when he is accused of a crime, too. Directed by Frank Borzage, the film is moody, dark and a bit gothic. Dane Clark and Gail Russell are your leads, with a late-film appearance by Ethel Barrymore. And you’ll hate young Lloyd Bridges. Noir czar Eddie Muller calls Borzage ‘relentlessly romantic,” which is a huge contrast to this film, which Muller ranks it among his top 25 noir films.

Kind Of A Nice Snack (Lions, Towers & Shields 127)

Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy podcast. Bette Davis in her most iconic role, attempts to fend off the usurping Anne Baxter. The drama plays out in the New York theatre. There’s a witty script and a delightful supporting cast, along with many legends about how this film came together. Come and feast with us around the camp fire.

Clown Car Full of Raincoats (Lions, Towers & Shields 133)

Deanna Durbin and Gene Kelly. Gotta be a musical, right? Actually, it’s a film noir, whose connection to Christmas is limited at best. So much misdirection, and I haven’t even told you the plot.

Tracy and Hepburn do “battle of the sexes” and help Judy Holiday launch her film career. There’s a random Cole Porter song, and T & H are adorable. George Cukor directs a great script.

Here is one of the greatest ensembles of the classic era - or any era, for that matter. Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Lucile Ball, Ann Miller, Eve Arden (and cat), Gail Patrick, Andrea Leads. Constance Collier, all sharing a theatrical boarding house in New York, and struggling to become big stars. Kate says something about calla lilies, and also snipes with Ginger. It’s so much fun!
