human-things interaction

(formerly @0x11eaea) I'm still trying to find a new usage pattern, but for now: follow this account for research announcements/discussion/networking, or lea@mastodon.social for "main". (I'll boost research posts to there as well.)

@yaxu also though, I think the badness of LaTeX/Word is just the tip of the iceberg — the idea that research needs to look a particular way is fundamentally gatekeepy (and *even within* the already narrow community of academic computer science, the specific format is exclusionary — ACM formatting reqs are hellish if you produce image-heavy work) but of course why stop there, since the whole existence of conference paper acceptances as the arbiter of careers is deeply rotten.

@FRiaK I’ve been so hype about this since I saw it in the CHI program!

@frankelavsky uhhhh a bit in chapters 7 and 11 of my thesis (lea.zone/papers/lea_thesis.pdf) but tbh I didn’t do as much as I wanted to with that. In computer-stuff, I like the work of @isaackarth and @maxkreminski on poetics and narrative of procedural generation, and in instructional and media art like Vera Molnar. In craft/fabrication, I am weirdly obsessed with David Pye, “The Nature and Art of Workmanship.”

@yaxu@post.lurk.org post-2020 even “senior academics + research students” is optimistic — it may have stabilized somewhat but in 2023/2024 it was definitely A Thing that, while the PhD students were being told they had to go to conferences to network with senior academics, the senior academics themselves were frequently opting out (for time/money/health reasons). 🙃
