Replying to
@briankrebs@infosec.exchange tree law is a thing, and depending on local laws you ... "may be entitled to compensation". no joke. https://www.findlaw.com/realestate/neighbors/conflicts-involving-trees-and-neighbors.html

after years - years! - of letting them fester i'm chewing through PRs in awesome-honeypots. several pre-dated COVID, that's how long i let them linger.

thanks to all who contribute.

Stanislaw Lem’s The Cyberiad is perfect reading for the generative AI age. Tons of superfluous machines in these short stories.

MSFT had five compelling releases of Windows over a span of 35 years - 3.11, 95, XPsp2, NT4, and 7. all others are varying degrees of junk.

@ryanaraine@infosec.exchange recently talked history with @mroesch@mstdn.social on his security conversations podcast. marty talks about the creation of #snort , it's surprise and sudden growth to a popular open source tool, and basically creating the business model of selling atop an open source platform - turns out what enterprise buyers needed was distinct from what open source users needed, and so it didn't cannibalize the market. he also talks about the blocked checkpoint bid, going public, and the cisco acquisition.

i ran snort back in the late 90s, stood up an instance at my grad school (which was popped) over the y2k timeframe. dealt with lots of noisy logs etc. even built my own front end to it (to learn database-backed webapp development). love this trip down memory lane.

@da_667@infosec.exchange counterpoint: LLMs are opaque, weird machines (in the Sergey Bratus sense) that reveal surprising things when interrogated.

https://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~sergey/wm/

similar to the execution abstraction in the classic "Next 700 Programming Languages" paper

https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~crary/819-f09/Landin66.pdf

anyhow, just advocating for why sometimes they're kind of neat.
