@hacks4pancakes I know more a few gay Singaporeans.
I’m glad the place is safe for them. I want the rest of the world to have that feeling.

@evacide@hachyderm.io thanks. Kicked that to a person I know who‘s been involved with non-profit operations for a while.
Looks like a bad ass job, overall. I’m absolutely not qualified.

Really, this means the push for larger scale sovereign LLM projects in other nations.
I still feel like these systems are mostly hype, for obvious reasons. And here, Anthropic got bitten by their own marketing and hype engine.

@evacide@hachyderm.io I recently had an American claiming Brussels, and Berlin are dangerous and scary.
Having spent time in some actually dangerous places, I have to wonder what suburban hell they grew up in.

So, if you put a bunch of computers in orbit, ignoring the hard problems like heat, cooling, moving heat away from sensitive components, per KG fuel costs to get it in orbit, fitting the shit in to geostationary, or other high orbit.
You still have "how do you deal with equipment failures and loss of components" and "get enough up there to ensure redundancy".
I don't know if you've built a datacenter, but that's a bunch of mass to move.

Take a standard "household" laser, and point it at the sensor of a normal digital camera. That'll simulate the degradation of a CMOS in orbit pretty effectively, and slightly faster.

There’s a wide gulf between unfriendly and dangerous. A city can be unfriendly without you risking death by just being there.
Dangerous cities implies risk to life, limb, or items. I should be prepared for someone to take my wallet at knife point in a dangerous city.
I don’t expect to get stabbed in the liver for stopping to gawk at something in an unfriendly city.

It'd have to be as cheap as shipping a fully laden 40ft intermodal (ISO 668) container from Oakland to Shanghai before its actually economical. That's about $3000 USD for the container, not counting cargo, insurance, etc.. Max capacity is about 30500 kg.
That's getting a datacenter in orbit, securely, with cooling, radiators, shielding, power, and redundancy for under $3/kg.
That's not going to happen.

But that’s not even usage, then. You’ve solved the problem already.

- I had a couple failures that made me use ed. A few more where I had to do some editing abusing deeper file handing in the OS.
And, yes I do like vi, the point of having vi keybindings in my IDE.
I’ve a Facebook friend who is a hospice nurse. And I have to say, I’m both fascinated and utterly humbled by the things she posts.

I can’t think of any Linux distribution that has vi by default in its minimal install.
If I have to get it installed by accessing the network, attaching a device, bootstrapping a new filesystem, it is not installed. QED.
Replying to
@richarddegenne@mastodon.online @GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social what is usage, then?
Is my usage of “ping” leveraging the tool, or am I just too damn lazy to build my own socket and packet?
What is “proper usage” of an LLM or LRM? If any amount of it is bad, there is no usage at all, just over reliance.

Juniper’s JunOS has (had?) vi, due to the FreeBSD runtime. Can’t say Cisco iOS does.

An excellent piece from Vogue about Meta's continuing attempt to make their "smart glasses" fashionable and cool that makes all of the right points about the ways in which normalizing ubiquitous surveillance creates a world we don't want to live in.

@eyrea@mstdn.ca @evacide@hachyderm.io I disagree. While cities and towns may be different, the threat models from drugs, behavior, etc, are not that different.
Perception of danger is its own thing, and I suspect no one will like what I'll say.

@woozle@toot.cat Even then, it's not actually economical if the customers aren't willing to pay extra for the resources, which will be highly latent in a world that despises latency.
You end up with Sealand all over again, where the idea is better than the implementation ever can be.
Eventually, you have orbiting scrap, cluttering the sky, slowly decaying in orbit.

It‘s not just that it‘s a bad idea, it‘s a solution looking for a problem to solve.
The only advantage in having anything beyond basic communications satellites and telescopes in orbit is solar power.
That‘s it. Everything else increases complexity while gaining very little.
