Signs are part of our every day life, worldwide … like these three. They look similar but have different meanings: 1) the logo of Santander, a German bank, 2) the logo of steinecke, a German bakery chain, 3) the symbol for an Onsen, a hot spring in Japan. Which sign(s) caught your attention today? #signsofthecity #signsoflife #immaterialculturalheritage #intangibleculturalheritage #tuqtuli
tuqtuli
Tuqtuli is a communication principle where signs are lined up like words. It is useful wherever people lack a shared language and corresponding help.
Tuqtuli aims to involve as many as different people as possible as co-creators and testers of a new visual way of global communication. Like you!
The project started in 2024 and since then has been at conferences, festivals and universities in Belgium, Germany, Japan and the USA.
You are welcome to co-create and cooperate!
Also in Toulouse, France, every station on the Metro has its own icon. They are highlighting the city’s cultural and historical heritage. People with cognitive, visual or mental disabilities, as well as foreigners and illiterate people, can therefore identify metro stops more easily. https://toulousesecret.com/en/pictograms-metro-toulouse/ #signsoflife #signsofthecity
Every station on the Mexico City Metro has its own icon. When they started many of the population at the time were illeterate. Santiago de Chile had the same tradition but, sadly, it was abandoned. #signsoflife #signsofthecity

In Bardenitz in Brandenburg (Germany) people sport these symbols on their mailboxes. At carnival, the children dress up and go from house to house. They leave these pictogram-shaped stickers on the letterbox wherever they are let in and invited for juice and cake. This relatively new tradition is called »zempern« #immaterialculturalheritage #intangibleculturalheritage #signsoflife
