Great Nix Flake Check is out!
youtuber clickbait voice I Tried Evaluating EVERY Nix Flake And Here Is What I Found
(ok but seriously, I found a bunch of cool stuff and wrote it down, go check it out!)
I think one thing tumblr got right is calling blog posts blog posts, and reblogs reblogs. I love me some silliness, but “retoot” is too silly for me.
also text interspersed with images. like. it’s bonkers that nobody else has that.
new blog post: observing specialization on stable rust (while relying only on documented behaviour)
new crates.io frontend loads 0.5M of javascript instead of 1.7M, which I guess is an improvement, but I did hope that a rewrite would introduce SSR and remove loading placeholders. not that it’s a big deal, I mostly manually type docs.rs/smth anyways, and lib.rs is always there
so CppNix changed what shallow means on a git flakeref somewhere between v2.18 and v[now], and the meanings are like completely different, so that’s nice and cool
I’m semi-frequently exposed to a Variety of political opinions, and I noticed an interesting effect: it’s really hard to verbally disagree with someone whose opinion is a complete polar opposite of yours. voicing your disagreement requires framing it in terms of a common moral compass: “we agree that A is bad, and B leads to A, so B is also bad”. but disagreeing with someone who doesn’t share any of your values requires dropping down to the level of ethics theory, which is basically impossible to do in casual conversation. therefore, people with similar opinions argue more than people with opposite opinions.
the problem with writing tools that use nix is that “the bug is actually in nix” is a common occurence and you never know when you need to stop debugging whatever you were doing and start debugging your nix implementation instead
trains are so cool. wdym I went to sleep in one city and woke up in another. that’s like magic
just merged partial updates in unflake! now you can easily update individual dependencies, both with native backend and with npins backend. you can even individually update transitive dependencies by specifying their flakerefs.
that was a big feature and I’m really happy that it’s done. I’ll tackle some usability hurdles next, and then I’ll probably work on explicitly duplicated deps (when you want to have multiple separately locked copies of the same dependency) and remaining bugs from GNFC.
I think them naming the forum platform “Discourse” was ill-advised, nominative-determinism-wise
chat, let’s say I have a tree (e.g. AST) and I want to do some matching: for example, find any nodes of kind a that are siblings to nodes of kind b. (ideally I’d also like to do rewriting, but that seems to be an easier part)
are there any ready solutions I’m missing (preferrably in Rust, but like, whatever, I’m open to various languages)? I looked at https://docs.rs/selectors, which is kinda neat, but API surface I need to implement to use is large and it doesn’t let me do queries that return multiple nodes
