Fellow PhD student: hello! :blobcat_waverev: I hope you had a good Monday.
0) In which country are you pursuing your PhD?
1) What is the official duration of your PhD programme? Does it assume you already have a Master's?
2) How many academic credits (e.g., ECTS) are you required to get in order to complete your PhD?
3) If you are paid for TAing, can you estimate the number of teaching contact hours you need in order to supplement other sources of funding?
My union and Ph.D. committee have been asking for feedback, and I have a theory I'd like to test. Feel free to use private mentions if you want.
Edit: I am now using "academic credits" to make myself more understandable to non-EU people.

@liamoc@types.pl @phil444@mastodon.org.uk@liamoc@types.pl I feel your pain. Was an academic for a long time....
My feeling over time became "I'll help, teach and encourage the students who turn up... the ones who don't, too bad".I wpuld immediately adopt this mindset with a turnout of, say, 80%. When attendance is 10%, though, isn't there a possibility that somewhere along the way the system had students believe that showing up to class does not really matter? If so, I am happy not to waste time on students who clearly choose not to try of their own volition, but I would feel guilty not helping students who might have been tricked into not trying.

@amy@types.pl Best of luck!
Will you be needing/accepting donations, e.g. LiberaPay? I haven't found this documented in the Codeberg repo. Should one use the individual maintainers' ko-fis?

@gallais@mamot.fr FoSSaCS and ESOP are untainted, luckily!
The official account mainly posts about keynotes (participants to all main conferences are invited to those), hence why all the slop. Not sure who in the steering committee is to be blamed for this.

@bool@mathstodon.xyz Thank you!
3) 0So if I understand this right, your funding situation is such that you can live by without teaching/TAing? I hope this question is not too personal.

2) 180 ects (mostly for the defense)Do you know how many of these are not covered by your PhD thesis/defence?3) We can teach max 64 hrs/year the first 3 years.Would you say that, if you hadn't taught at all during your first three years, your income would still have been enough to allow you to live by (for those three years alone)?

In my case I have chosen to teachSo teaching is not mandatory at all in your specific programme? If you hadn't chosen to teach, would your income have been enough to live by in the city in which you got your PhD?

@Sobex@social.sciences.re would you say that your funding de facto required you to take on some teaching just to make ends meet? If so, could you estimate the number of contact hours (not sure if "TDs" only cover the time spent in class for the tutorial, or also the time spent to prepare for it)?

3) NASo if I understand, you don't need any teaching to get by, since your external funding is enough to live by?

My class of over 100 students gets lecture attendance of around 10.I am struggling with low attendance, too. As a teaching assistant, I moved to a different academic system recently, where I was told turnouts have been in the toilet for the past few years.
I know that mandatory attendance is more of a thing in soft sciences and humanities, so I have never heard CS/Maths professors express an opinion on the matter. How do we feel about it? I would like to form an opinion.
Out of curiosity, does your system also pressure you to pass almost everybody taking the course? As in, learning is not really a necessary condition to get a passing grade?
