@beemoh@mastodonapp.uk @apenkop@mstdn.social @RandamuMaki@mstdn.social @ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk … and with the FPTP voting system for UK parliamentary elections, one (in)credible candidate standing against Garage will be much more humiliating, numerically and politically.

@beemoh@mastodonapp.uk @apenkop@mstdn.social @RandamuMaki@mstdn.social @ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk If other parties put up candidates against Garage, they would be criticised for adding legitimacy to his stunt for avoiding accountability. If he looses, he looses, and will have a politically unsurvivable loss of face. If he wins, he looses, as his corruption will be exposed by the Parliamentary Standards investigation, which will lead to a legitimate, contested, by-election. At least, that's what we're counting on, plus the criminal investigations.

@gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green @J2@tldr.nettime.org @paulschoe@mastodon.world @YimbyEarth@mas.to Perhaps they are just assuming the same weird and obtuse interpretation of eminent domain rights as numerous oil and gas pipeline companies in the US? (I.e what's yours is mine, if I have adopted a business model that requires me to expropriate it.)

@Lats@aus.social @xs4me2@mastodon.social @pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green COP climate scientists' methodology excluded any recent, alarming, research into sea levels, acidification, ice-melt, AMOC etc. from their models. And lobbyists watered things down further. This lowered assessments of risk, and error bounds. Then policy makers adopted a max CO2 concentration that only had at best a 50% chance of meeting their 1.5C limit even according to these conservative models, ... and then did nothing, except adopt policies that make it worse.

@electropict @benroyce @urlyman @ReggieHere @vfrmedia @metaphil @fj FWIW, I believe The Political Compass' methodology is to keep the same metrics and scale, allowing results to be compared over time. This allows, e.g., UK Labour's shift to the authoritarian right to be tracked, rather than them being portrayed as vaguely centre, or even leftwing, as rightwing rags and social media platforms normalise extremist, authoritarian political discourse.

@paulschoe@mastodon.world I guess there's a long history; letters patent, enclosure acts, colonialism, etc. Essentially any human activity involving exploitation of a power imbalance. In this case, the victims include other corporate entities. Something, something, class-struggle, etc.

@davey_cakes @dramypsyd I have Emacs set up to make it easy to enter en-dash, em-dash, ellipsis, and proper quotation marks, but there are alternatives: https://ladedu.com/how-to-insert-en-dash-and-em-dash-on-linux/

@harry_karadimas@toot.community @angusm@mastodon.social What we currently have is Artificial Stupidity.

@fazalmajid @maxschrems Like in the UK now; the Labour gov has even stated explicitly that the role of regulators is to promote 'growth', hence hiring a Meta honcho to run the Competition & Markets Authority …

@foldworks @johncarlosbaez FWIW, the database seems to be flawed: some of my work is listed as eligible for compensation, but neither using my Library of Congress registered full-name, nor assigned ISBNs, retrieved it; I had to resort to searching by title. I also suspect other works of mine contained in the original sources may have been excluded for stupid reasons (e.g. some trivial difference in file sizes? Who knows...)

@johncarlosbaez So, authors have to make the claim even if copyright was assigned to the publisher? There's a lot that seems off in this "settlement"...

@MartinEscardo You can always use the calculator to calculate the accuracy of the calculator…

@foldworks @johncarlosbaez As I mentioned in another post, copyright holders who are not US citizens shouldn't need to register to have their rights protected in the US since the US signed up to the Berne Convention. If the more restrictive terms are court-approved, then that's a breach.

@Harlander @johncarlosbaez I understood that the conventional legal theory was that only US citizens have to register US copyright to have standing in the US, but that non-US citizens don't, as they automatically have standing under the Berne Convention. If this has changed, and rights under the Berne Convention are being ignored, then it would appear to be a breach of international treaty obligations (assuming those are still a thing).
