this is the back of one of my new Mandelbrot knit sweaters https://knityak.com/collections/antenna-crown in shades of blue. these ship with the code in Python to generate your specific spot on the Mandelbrot fractal with these same four colors and dithering. these are made with a new on demand manufacturer and are pixel native from my code: one pixel equals one knit stitch.

this is my second year growing a genetically diverse mix of cucurbita moschata using adaptive gardening/landrace gardening principles. they thrive here in spite of the squash vine borers, squash bugs, and powdery mildew that plagues cucurbita maxima. i have a half dozen curing on a porch and another dozen still growing over my lawn (mowed weedy meadow). i eat them green in zucchini recipes and after ripe + a one month curing period, they are delicious and last for months, some all winter, in my garage. the pollinators do all the genetic mixing for me. i save seeds and they were triply as prolific in my kid's daycare garden as those pictured here in my garden. i only watered them the first few weeks after planting. most were direct sown and covered with plant cages, a few i seed started indoors.

I was just in Krakow, Poland and was a little surprised not to find any tributes to Sierpinski there. I know he spent much of his life and career in Warsaw though. He did his doctorate in Krakow around 1905-1906. Then at one point at the end of world war ii after the Warsaw uprising, having all his papers, books and letters being burned, and being forcible deported to a transit camp, he apparently walked 64 km back to Krakow to pick up teaching mathematics again, before later returning to Warsaw. I need a Sierpinski biography to corroborate but I think that's the general idea.

five different unique one off 1D CA one-dimensional cellular automata sweaters in rule 90. https://knityak.com/collections/voltage if you were to use a generating row with just one pixel with rule 90 you get Sierpinski triangles. i have new ledger code helping me to keep track of generating rows i already sold: so once someone gets one, no one else gets the same one. also i made new three color dithered backgrounds so these are four color knits.

many of the sweaters and blankets on the new https://knityak.com are now knit in four colors. i've done new custom dithered colors for the edges of the mandelbrot set and new custom fade backgrounds for mac rom sweaters. they are pixel native code generated designs where one pixel equals one knit stitch. for many designs i ship the source code for your spot on the mandelbrot set and your mac boot rom. the seams are linked, not cut and sewn. #math #knit #computationallyfabulous

@PermaSolarPotter@mastodon.green yes seminole are a varietal of moschata. my recommendation is mix them up with lots of other moschata. early next year grab some of these when they come into stock. https://goingtoseed.org/products/squash-moschata-1

@funkylab@mastodon.social oh dang! i kept expecting to see some kind of tribute to Sierpinski but I guess he was in Warsaw mostly and only a few years in Krakow.

@LJ@sunny.garden and if you want fresh eating apples sooner rather than in years (sometimes first year you plant) get some pre grafted seedlings on semi dwarf rootstock (apples start producing faster on dwarf or semi dwarf but full dwarfing rootstock trees don't live that long so pick semi dwarf). honeycrisp (which i'm allergic to raw like all modern commercial apples i've tried) is super slow to produce so pick something else. cummins nursery has great pre grafted tree seedlings. you pick two in the same bloom period (there is a chart on cummins nursery's website for good partners for each apple) plant them in the spring and often get apples that first fall.

i got to taste Freiherr von Berlepsch apples yesterday for the first time. i picked it a little early but it was bruising in a berry clamshell i had it in (to save it from the squirrels absconding with it). and i now have two ancient apples that i've grown myself that i have confirmed i'm not allergic to raw! the ones i've tasted are Freiherr von Berlepsch this year and Orleans Reinette last year.
i keep saying i might not be allergic to "pre 1800s apples" but technically Freiherr von Berlepsch was bred in 1880. it did however have sufficiently ancient parentage (Ananas Reinette [1500s] x Ribston Pippin [1707]) and no parents from the modern apple genetic bottleneck list. and anyway now i have confirmed zero oral allergy syndrome with Freiherr von Berlepsch. woohoo! i also saved a few seeds from it and i hope to plant them in the method of Steven Edholm/Skillcult. they are cold stratifying aka in a ziplock bag in the fridge until early spring.

@PermaSolarPotter@mastodon.green a mixed up jumble of moschata become less fussy the more you grow them in your location. it's called adaptation gardening : free course https://goingtoseed.org/products/1406309 or grab this book https://goingtoseed.org/products/landrace-gardening from your local library

@LJ@sunny.garden i have done several seasons of grafting. many of the pre 1800s varietal seedlings i have were from scions that i bench grafted onto rootstock, most are a year or two away from flowering and fruiting still. i have not been so succesful grafting onto established apple trees but it probably is just my technique, many folks are successful with it. i also have been making cider with commercial unfiltered pasteurized apple juice plus yeast to teach myself. easy peasy. you could make your apples into cider! or just plant a bunch of apple seedlings nearby since you have a spot that apple trees like.
