@foolishowl@social.coop @GeanyIDE@social.milchreislieferei.de It's always a good idea to follow @GeanyIDE@social.milchreislieferei.de for new releases (though I might be biased here ). Since the Debian maintainer pushed Geany 2.1 already, I assume Geany-Plugins 2.1 will follow soon. :crossed_fingers:

TIL: test -s exists - an easy way to check for non-empty files in bash scripts.

Nothing new, nothing sensational but comes in quite handy sometimes when just need to know is there any content in file X.

E.g.:

if [ -s /path/to/some/file ]; then
echo "the file is not empty"
fi

#bash #shell

@partim @mkivinen No. We don't need first class areas in S-Bahnen. When you are one of the other 800 people in a crowded train or you aren't able to get in at all, an empty first class area is the last thing you need :disappointed:. We need space for all passengers.

Dear Geany users,

there is a little hidden gem in Geany you might or might not know about already:

it's called Send Selection To and let's you pass the currently selected text from Geany to any command that will read and process the text from its standard input stream and Geany will read the standard output of the command and replaces the selected text with this output.

The commands to use can be configured freely in Geany. And the first three configured commands can be easily executed with a keyboard shortcut.

There are countless possibilities to quickly alter the text or code you are editing in Geany, only a few ideas:

  • sort lines (using sort, as seen above)
  • sort lines uniquely to remove duplicates (using sort -u)
  • convert camelCase to snake_case and vice versa
  • pretty print JSON (using python3 -mjson.tool)
  • auto format your code (e.g. using black, indent or clang-format or any other command line formatter)
  • pretty print SQL statements (using sqlformat --reindent -)
  • encode Base64 (using base64 -w 0)
  • decode Base64 (using base64 -d)
  • ... (feel free to share your custom commands as answers)

More details can be found in the documentation:
https://geany.org/manual/#sending-text-through-custom-commands

Some examples are described in detail in the wiki:
https://wiki.geany.org/config/customcmds/sort-selection
https://wiki.geany.org/howtos/format_escaped_newlines
https://wiki.geany.org/howtos/convert_camelcase

There are rumors there will be a new Geany :geany: release in about three weeks. Stay tuned, I'm sure @GeanyIDE@social.milchreislieferei.de will tell us soon that Geany 2.1 is on its way .

@stefanct@chaos.social @GeanyIDE@social.milchreislieferei.de Hint hint: https://nightly.geany.org/debian/ These builds are created from GIT master which is usually much more stable than it sounds. I use it every day for work.

@yuka@s.umeyashiki.org Are you really surprised about overcommittent at Contabo? There is probably no other way to offer such low prices. If you want rather fair hosting, you would have to pay fair prices as well. Still, interesting approach to automatically purge page caches automatically on customer systems .

@GeanyIDE@social.milchreislieferei.de I saw a few web articles since the 2.1 release of Geany. They more or less rephrased the release notes we published. Which is totally fine. But I guess it was missed that the Geany-Plugins collection was also released and beside nice small additions in there, there was a whole new plugin: Geany-LSP This plugin integrates any (or least almost) LSP server into Geany and enriches Geany's functionality a lot. From my point of view, this is a great addition which lots of useful additional features. So, if you wrote and will write an article about Geany, please notice the Geany-LSP plugin and tell other Geany users about. The plugin is distributed as part of the Geany-Plugins collection, see https://github.com/geany/geany-plugins It's development and issue tracker can be found at its project page: https://github.com/techee/geany-lsp The plugin developer did a great job in writing the plugin and also extending the Geany core to work with the plugin. This was a hard bit of work. #Geany #LSP #language_server_protocol
