Reading Thinking #Forth I find myself with a very familiar feeling to how I've been understanding software development for many years unrelated to Forth. I think even if forth doesn't interest you that book has a great philosophy of software development

I feel like there is an untapped potential in #gamedev for games that help you learn a language. Of course there is always the option to change the language to your target language but that only works if the game is simple enough and you are almost at that level.

I was imagining something like Chants of Sennaar, but less puzzle-like. You arrive at an Island where they speak your target language. They know you are a foreigner so it starts with very simple language and pointing at things. As you learn the language it gets progressively more difficult.

However, in contrast to chants of sennaar I think the key part is that the language is NOT the objective of the game. The game should stand on it's own, but it offers a ramp up on the language.

Imagine Stardew Valley but with Japanese for example. The game should be fun on it's own and the language fade in the background as you learn more mimicking more realistic immersion contexts.

Does anyone know any other game like Chants of Sennaar where you are deciphering a language over time?

@0x0961h@mastodon.gamedev.place I think the point here is that it shouldn't try to teach you that. If you are inside of a game that is interesting and stands by itself, that's just dialog of the game. If you are experienced that's fine. No one complains because a game says "I am happy" in English if you already know English, right? I think that's what these get wrong (IMO). They focus on the learning instead of the game. I think the focus should be in the game while paying attention to the language ramp up so you don't get immediately overwhelmed if you are starting up. I think it's probably quite hard to do but I may try

@0x0961h@mastodon.gamedev.place Yes, the ramp up. When I tried playing a game in the language I'm learning (japanese) it was either a boring game for kids at my level or a game that interested me but was far too complicated.
