The same goes for upper caste, well networked people from South Asia too. One of the vilest responses to my application was from an upper caste professor in the UK. And I was so devastated that I sent that email to people to see if I was reading too much into it.+

@jeremy my issue is often with the cynicism targeted often at the marginalized students. There are kinder ways to convey the dire state of the job market, or the inequalities in academia. But the constant push to discourage marginalized, POC folks to join academia kind of seems a bit like, as you said, gatekeeping.

Everyone told me it was unnecessarily brutal. Sure enough, I kept checking who they ended up supervising. It was someone with almost the same topic as mine, just from their UG and PG alma mater.I understand networks are almost everything in academia, but snatching opportunities to even build that network from people who don't have that, that's a fucking dick move.+

And pestering such people to leave once they are in it, because it's so bad, well I don't see you leaving sir. Why don't you vacate this space if it's that bad for you? I am reading up on academic networks and social capital, and sometimes this pestering from established people just feels like a ploy to push out people who might be able to change it for good.

I know a bunch of Indian Twitter came over here when Sanjay Hegde, a tech policy lawyer was suspended from Twitter and everyone went back within a week or so, but this time the migration seems way bigger and I hope this sticks.
