Kinda retired, but not very good at it. Freelance tech columnist for the Houston Chronicle. Project manager for Space City Weather. Still a pizza lover, aspiring cat lady.

I live in Houston. It's worth it.

Head's up, Mastodon users: There appears to be a coordinated effort to impersonate relatively high-profile people who have accounts on various instances but who have not used them in a while.

I've gotten several follow notifications - and a couple of DMs - from impersonators of people I know. The bogus accounts have lots of underscores in the handles, and they repost items from the past, sometimes years old. If you spot this, please report, do not engage, and then block.

Pls boost.

Seeing online reports that John C. Dvorak, longtime computer columnist and podcaster, has died. Have not seen a confirmation of this, but apparently he died after complications from heart bypass surgery. He and I were co-panelists many times on @TWiT@mastodon.social over the years, and his early writings were an inspiration for me to get into tech journalism. RIP.

I've been so excited about the explosion of new Mastodon apps that I decided to write about it in my column, with a focus on @ivory@tapbots.social and @icecubesapp@mastodon.cloud. A thousand flowers blooming!

There are a lot of knee-jerk, AAIAB (All AIs Are Bad) stances among some writers, but used properly, it's just another tool in the box. @mathewi@journa.host nails it. https://torment-nexus.mathewingram.com/using-ai-to-write-isnt-always-wrong-and-other-heresies/

Meta: If we are forced to pay billions to make our products safer for kids in New Mexico “…we may have no choice but to remove access to its platforms for users in New Mexico entirely.”

New Mexico: Don't threaten us with a good time.

USB-C was supposed to be the one cable to rule them all. But different cables have different capabilities; telling them apart isn't easy. WhatCable is a free, open-source app for Macs will tell you what a cable can (and can’t) do.

The FCC's goofy foreign-made router ban (surprise! All consumer routers in the US are made overseas) is dumb enough on its face, but there's a dumber problem looming next year, when its rules may forbid router makers from updating their firmware, even to fix vulnerabilities.

@geoffreyfowler @washingtonpost @Shira I agree with the points in this Geoffrey/Shira collaboration, EXCEPT I think a connected refrigerator might be useful. It would need to have a bar code scanner on it so I could quickly build a grocery list ... and would interoperate with many different list apps. We use Our Groceries. https://www.ourgroceries.com/overview

I was so impressed with the MacBook Neo after reviewing it that I bought one. I use it primarily as a computer in the living room, something to grab off the coffee table in those "what's that actor's name again...?" moments. I'm still very happy with it, but have additional thoughts since I reviewed after owning one for almost 8 weeks. Would this be something you'd be interested in reading? #macbookneo #apple

@Scubyw@mastodon.nz Depends on who the high-profile is. Some are quite worth the follow. But in this case, as I indicated originally, these are accounts that have been mostly abandoned. They're definitely not worth a follow.

@flargh@mastodon.social I'm curious, what point release of iOS 26 are you using? And have you had the opportunity to use it on a newer iPhone? I've been using the public betas (now 26.2 beta 3) on a 17 Pro Max and have had a few actual crashes, when launching messages. Probably the first time I've had a full system crash on an iPhone, ever. Otherwise, it is behaving.

@flargh@mastodon.social Interesting that the Boston Globe will now have 2 paywalled sites. Its original model of a free site separate from the subrscription-required “newspaper” site was something that other papers adopted, including the Houston Chronicle and other Hearst publications. Looks like they are still working out how many free stories you can read each month, and at least the cost is pretty low ($5/mo).
