#30DayMapChallenge Day 28 - Black Friday
Black Friday or Bird Friday?
We think that birdwatching is better than impulsive shopping - even in November.
Our map shows the 1512 observations in Finland that eBird users have posted over the past Black Fridays (2015-2024).
What birds have you seen today?
By: @matabatchi@mapstodon.space & Sini Ruohomäki

So welcome, Spencer, to DGL and to Helsinki❤️.
#30DayMapChallenge Day 20 - Water: An Australian River Alphabet
Inspired by Katie Holten's Irish Tree Alphabet 🌳
Not many Australian river names begin with either 'X' and 'Z'. Symbols to still be developed

#30DayMapChallenge Day 4 - My Data
The 2025 citybike season in Helsinki has come to an end last week. As an avid user of the bike sharing system, Robert Klein has plotted his more than 350 trips of this year's season on a map.
A very productive and inspiring week in Cambridge! Catching up on FOOTPRINTS progress so far and planning for the future together. We would like to thank Professor Andrew Balmford and the Conservation Science Group, as well as the wider community in the David Attenborough building for being such wonderful hosts.

The popularity of outdoor recreation in Finland is growing and the ways
people move in nature are diversifying.
Together with Metsähallitus Parks and Wildlife Services we propose operationalizing the use of mobile big data for visitor monitoring and the management of outdoor recreation.
Our policy recommendations draw on our long-term research using digital footprints to understand recreation and nature conservation.

Our collaboration with Metsähallitus is moving ahead even more efficiently and with greater impact!
We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Metsähallitus Parks & Wildlife Finland to deepen our research cooperation and streamline the two-way sharing of data and knowledge.
This is great news for us, for Metsähallitus, and of course for everyone who enjoys the outdoors!

Lopuksi pullakahvit!

Mikä on Helsingin sometetuin viheralue?

📢 GREENTRAVEL VR Technical Report Released!
🌳 🚴 🌳In GREENTRAVEL, we developed an in-house VR system to conduct VR cycling experiments into the wellbeing effects of urban street greenery during everyday cycling activities. We learnt a lot, documented the process in detail and now release that documentation openly for all.

Day 24 - Black & White
Sun setting over Finland on Nov 24th - not a lot of daylight this time of the year.
Another challenge filled with intriguing, inventive, and funny cartography in the bag 🗺️🌍 Check out what our lab members cooked up for this year's #30DayMapChallenge

Day 27 - Dot
Pop art dot distributions! Random points generated for the entire country, counties, municipalities and grid cells. One dot represents 1000 people.
For #30DayMapChallenge Day 29 "Population", @oleksa@mapstodon.space again mapped the effect of Russia's full-scale invasion over his native Lysychansk city, Sievierodonetsk and Rubizhne - now with decreased nighttime lights as a proxy of humanitarian crisis there since early 2022 (!)
Day 28 - Is this a chart or a map?
It's got places in it, that counts, right?
Here's a sneak peek into an upcoming work of ours.
📢THREE (!) positions open in our Lab:
