How thick are people? The RNLI saves lives; they don't give a toss where people come from or how they got there. They care that some poor soul is in peril on the sea!

What an utter joke the .GOV One login blah, blah blah is!!!
So I had to renew my driving license (That's a joke too! I'll have to do this all again in five years' time). My passport is expiring soon; luckily, I could use my still-valid driver's license.
That was a bit of a faff, but I thought it was funny that it offered to use a 2016 photo of me on file for the registration. 🤯
What you learn is that you're registering for One Logon, which is basically the government's version of Authenticator. Then, having registered with One Login you've got to register with the GOV website. It wanted my passport number, but hang on- that's expired? And I told you I didn't want to use it? No. I had to put my number in. Unbelivably it told me the quickest way to register was to use the ten year old photo on my passport! So all these security checks and it's happy to use old photos. 🤦♂️
Word of caution: If you give the wrong year you moved into where you live your account will be locked, there's no second chances.
Why?

And here's gaffe number one from St Andy Burnham. Of course, the official line will be: "No secrets were divulged." I bet they weren't; the Americans, Russians and Chinese already know all our secrets. 🤣

@markwyner@mas.to I read your blog post, and I have to say it hasn't changed my opinion. I'm always saying, "The moment someone says they need a moderator, you need to tell yourself; there goes my freedom." I'm not sure how an instance can claim to be decentralised and then, with the next breath, tell users it has blocked sections of the Fediverse.
My view is that users should be responsible for their own policing. Users should block or mute accounts they dislike, disagree with or have no wish to see. A blanket ban disenfranchises the entire user base of an 'instance' the right to access material. Now I'm not stupid. Of course, anything illegal, such as child porn, should be banned, and yes, people might need someone to turn to if being harassed, but my concern is always the growth of Tribalism: "We hate Trump and we don't want any Toots about him on here!" I'm glad the post said, "It’s simply someone saying they don’t like what another person said" There are a lot of people in life looking for ways to shut other people up.
Just some personal thoughts.

@jakeyounglol@mstdn.social The Fediverse is nothing like Twitter. For a start, there are no algorithms. No friend suggestions. Secondly, from the early days of Identi.ca through to the Fediverse, the idea was freedom. Then, the Twitter migrants arrived, and calls for walled gardens intensified. Freedom isn't what others decide it should be. 🙂
