Replying to

@gadgetgav@mas.to @czauner@social.vivaldi.net @molly0xfff@hachyderm.io I'm a bit hesitant to suggest Wordpress with the drama Matt Mullenweg has created around it, but it's one of the most popular platforms for running a small website and there are plenty of providers offering various levels of managed hosting solutions. Also, exporting and moving on should be facilitated by the huge plugin ecosystem. In general, picking an open source platform with fully managed hosting but with an option to go self-hosted is a good starting point.

I'm absolutely amazed by the breadth of open source Mac OS security tools created by the non-profit org Objective-See: https://objective-see.org/tools.html

They take a bit more effort to understand and use than generic virus scanners, but it's a great combination of learning about malware mechanisms and heuristics to detect them!

Just catching up with the #Fosstodon drama and I don't think anything at this point can redeem the instance, so I'll be moving.

Really sad that there's no way to move toots, so will probably have to find a way to host them on my website as an archive or something.

Bad decisions aside, I do want to thank everyone who operated the instance all these years without outages as a side job, offering me a home on the Fediverse.

See you at @dain@hachyderm.io

I've been resisting buying a fitness smartwatch because it's just another gadget and the good ones are expensive. But then my son wanted a device to play music from and I don't want to get him a smartphone yet, so after some research I found out that Garmin makes decent watches on which you can access most functionality without the phone app, including playing Spotify playlists offline.

I found used Vivoactive 4S for £52 on CeX with 5-year warranty and liked it so much that got one myself 😅

@wadus@hachyderm.io yep, I had the compiled assets, including compressed images and the XML file that is the "backend" 😅

@wadus@hachyderm.io I was in a similar situation mentioning to colleagues how amazing things we were making with Flash in ustwo in the 2000s and they were like "sure grandpa" so I got a bit of motivation to get an old site working again and after some Flash version detection tweaks it just works with bundled Ruffle player, even on mobile 🤯

Started writing a blog post to give a bit of perspective, but here's a sneak peek:

Arguably less complicated to preserve than the insulin pump 😅

@wadus@hachyderm.io at least it's (hopefully?) cheap 😅

But more importantly, are you coming to London then? 😸
