I don't have references handy, but if I recall from previous work in teaching multimedia learning classes, there is evidence that being able to see the facial expressions of a speaker, especially the moving lips and eyes, increases the viewers retention a significant amount. Amount. Most teachers would prefer not to have their face on screen, but I've always coached them to do it for the viewers.
