The results of the study that this article reports upon is that if atmospheric CO₂ levels continue to rise at the current rate then within several decades (50-odd years) our blood chemistry will be altered such that healthy homeostasis will be compromised.

So if you are concerned about water scarcity, sea level rise, damage due to floods and storms, crop failures, war, pestilence, and mass migrations here is something to add to the list of things driving us all toward a mass extinction event.

Stop fossil fuels. Stop war.

While not in the market for a new ThinkPad (mine is only around 8 years old), I do appreciate that Lenovo is reading the market and have released a repairable model. I Tried the Slick New ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14. It's Lenovo’s Most Repairable Ultraportable Yet

Ahead of CES 2026, I got to try the latest version of Lenovo's iconic ThinkPad X1 Carbon—and dug inside to see how this highly repairable model could well be a business-laptop trendsetter this year.

Years ago our old electric range died. We replaced it with a wall oven and this gas camping stove top. Finally now we have joined the 21st century and purchased a budget induction top. There were a couple of false starts (read, burnt pots) but we're now getting the hang of it. The past two nights I have successfully cooked 1. perfect rice and 2. a soup.

Today I cleaned all the windows and swept the chimney flue. That adds to the tally of checked items on the Autumnal Job List.

'Twas a gorgeous day just west of Te Waihora.

I cast a plinth for our old bird bath yesterday. The thrushes and blackbirds will be well pleased (to anthropomorphise, they probably won't care, but I like to think so).

Flu and covid vaccinations today, at the local pharmacy. Great move to have pharmacies deliver this service.

Playing with ideas for the component layout.

However, there's a 10m trench to be dug, so I'd best get on to that; that will be keep me warmer in any case!

@dnkboston@apobangpo.space @Ashedryden@xoxo.zone No, no apology, I didn't ask for one. I went back to the same medical centre several days later and requested a different doctor, I was sent straight to hospital. I still attend that medical centre and always refuse appointments with said doctor.

Induction hob. I managed to boil potato for mashed spud last night. I do not have it figured out. How do I set the timer? Why, when, with the rice, `300` was adequate, but boiling spuds I was jumping between `500` and `800`? I've work to do.

M. will poach gnocchi tonight.Yay,

@phil_stevens@mastodon.nz Correct. I painted an 80km sign on the back of our van some 6 or 7 years ago, and have not breached that speed in that time. From my understanding most vehicles use 12-15% less fuel on the difference between 80 and 100 km, therefore, reduced emissions (and I save a few pennies). By and large I have received very few examples of poor behaviour as a result. Sometimes people cut in front of me as they pass as obvious rebuke and I have received the occasional middle finger or toot on the horn. I remember back in the 70's when there were still many older slower vehicles on the road and they sported a 'slow vehicle' sign, other road users were able to accommodate that. Don't wait for the signs to go up.

Our piwakawaka (Aotearoa fantail) just flitted through the house. That's once or twice a day for a week or so now. I haven't caught sight of it in the act, but I suspect it leaves with one of our daddy long-legs (Pholcus phalangioides) on each visit.

Thank you for your kind and considered comments. I regret posing a rhetorical question. Paddock harvesting vegetables is solid work, and I spent all of last weekend roofing, and yesterday I spent a good part of the day digging and crow-barring stony soil and concrete (I managed to get a power pole, which stands within our boundary and was on a lean, back up to plumb). So, yes, over-worked hands. I left school at 16 years of age and I have spent a large portion of the subsequent 47 years exchanging manual labour for wages. Aside from the occasional minor injury, no sore hands, but in the past year, meh. My body is ageing, I accept that. Ngā mihi. @zeborah@mastodon.nz @aligorith@mastodon.nz

I managed to get my bit of roofing finished, so the last couple of days, after work, I've been clearing away the summer cover crop of borage, cow parsley, calendula, et al. ready to throw seed around for the winter cover crop of oats, rye, hairy vetch, and tick beans. Hopefully this wee bit of warmer weather holds to encourage germination.

The bees were still using the borage, I apologised, and pointed out that there is still plenty of borage in the garden.

Rainy day project. To cut recycled corrugated iron to length (13 pieces), panel beat to form, patch nail holes*, and apply the first coat of roof paint.

* I use Selleys Metal 2-part Epoxy Putty. I use it for lots of things, e.g. repairing the exhaust muffler holes on the utility vehicle.

@jbowen@mast.hpc.social I'm curious too. I have a space on the small web. Little to see, though I feed my mastodon posts to the gemini capsule and I use telescope browser (Omar Polo) to browse all the following protocols. Otherwise I've nothing to add to the conversation. I never managed to gain traction. Go well. gopher://cousinsd.net gemini://cousinsd.net finger://@cousinsd.net

@galan@mastodon.gamedev.place Thanks for your lovely note. A wee garden is still a garden! Working on an organic vegetable farm certainly has me covered on the fifth factor of the Noble Eightfold Path: Right Livelihood. I shan't expand on the other 7 factors. :-) I wish you well on your journey.
