I think proper mental health must involve, on some level, respecting the fact that you are a very thin conscious layer over a mammalian brain structure shared with wild animals, and while your higher thought processes may override those needs in the short-term, over the long-term, you're still an animal with basic needs like food security, shelter, territory you control, exercise, socializing, being horny, etc. and trying to ignore them instead of just taking a walk sometimes will be seriously detrimental no matter how many spoons you have.
At the same time, it's silly to assume that a future civilization will grow "beyond" such "base impulses". As C.S. Lewis pointed out, the fear of being perceived as childish is, itself, a childish thing. I think a highly advanced society might give itself more control over ancient feral urges while still preserving and shamelessly indulging in some of them, because they know better than to be ashamed of such desires.
half the furries I follow have profiles that are like "[therian] hello woof woof I like snuggles. Gardener. Gay Slut. PhD in computer science." and their latest post is "sometimes I wish I could take a shower with sulfuric acid to make sure I'm Actually Clean:tm:"
So, Costco wouldn't let me sign in, claiming my password was wrong. When I requested a code to be sent to my e-mail, they claimed no such account existed, but when I tried to create a new account they said I couldn't because an account with that e-mail already existed!
So I try to login with my old account credentials again, double checking the password, and suddenly realize part of the password is missing even after I paste it!
...At some point Costco decided to limit the password length to just 16 characters. My password is 20 characters. I can no longer type in my password.
If I had a nickel for every time this has happened to me, I'd have two nickels, which isn't much, but it's weird that it happened twice.
yearning for the chance to experience a second puberty that turns me into a bunny
what if I just released a pack of literally every single synth preset I ever made (under CC-BY-SA)
this was a rejected idea for the gamejam but I've just realized it sounds exactly like the kind of song i'd write 15 years ago
If you come to me claiming that someone needs to be banned from a server because they're "being problematic" and "lying about being raped", I expect actual proof.
If you instead justify this with the dumbest, most idiotic reason I've ever seen in my life, I will absolutely lose my fucking shit at you.
This response is so wrong and gross and disgusting on so many levels I struggle to find the words to describe it.
This is how abuse WORKS. This is EXACTLY how abusers gaslight their victims. Abuse them one day, come back then next with "oh I didn't mean it", over and over again.
@return0media@infosec.exchange @Viss@mastodon.social They got rid of their dedicated QA teams back in 2015 (while I was still working there). Since then all SWEs have been responsible for their own testing and it's been downhill ever since. The quality is supposed to be ensured by "dogfooding", except this obviously doesn't work.
I know the song idea I'm working on is good when my roommate asks "what song are you listening to"
we have so much wasted potential in VR it's going to make me fucking explode
I need to start a microblog where I keep a daily log of the insane things that AI has suggested to me at work.
The latest one is, after debug logging functions started causing linkage errors for some reason, it suggested to just REMOVE ALL THE DEBUG LOGGING instead of fix the linkage errors.
I will be at Anthrocon next weekend in case anyone wants to meet up
sometimes I wake up and remember that I somehow exist in a timeline where the deltarune weird route is a real thing that is in a real video game and not some kind of fever dream I had long ago.
After watching 50 YouTube videos on what actually causes plane crashes, I am now less concerned about the hour-long delay and more relieved that the maintenance people have spent the time necessary to ensure the plane doesn't explode
I hate biology SO MUCH. I had sharp pains in my foot and was worried I pulled a tendon, but it wasn't going away and didn't seem correlated to what I was doing with my foot.
It was actually just a knot in a muscle in my upper THIGH that needed a stretch, radiating pain down to my FOOT.
FUCK OFF, JUST TELL ME WHAT'S WRONG FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.
This post and everyone disagreeing with it are all wrong.
We should expect our software to have 100% uptime, even volunteer projects. This should not be achieved by demanding volunteers work unreasonable hours every day, but by building a software ecosystem that makes building a service that has 100% uptime *trivially easy*. It should be possible to spin up a website and have it survive millions of hits per day using at most a few servers in a closet with load balancing that can survive one of them crashing.
Bringing degrowth into this is insulting. If volunteers can't keep a website up 100% of the time, then we, as programmers, have utterly failed at our jobs. The response shouldn't be "only infinite growth would demand 100% uptime, we should just give up wanting that at all", the response should be to MAKE THINGS BETTER SO IT'S POSSIBLE FOR VOLUNTEERS TO ENSURE 100% UPTIME.
Modern society has lost all legitimacy to me. As a child, I agreed to participate in farcical rituals like spending 4 years getting a piece of paper that lets me get a job, because I believed that society existed for a reason. I was willing to at least try to go to bars and socialize like a "normal person" and try dating and driving and shopping and what have you. Now I don't even pretend to be interested in any of that.
After the Epstein files exposed that this charade only benefits rich pedophiles and psychopaths, civilization has lost all moral authority.
my fans would be so fucking mad at me if they realized I was actually sitting on two entire albums worth of nearly-finished songs that I can't figure out how to finish because my ability to evaluate music outstripped my skill level again
i need to finish my current projects so I can write a bunch of scifi stories nobody will ever read
it's crazy how the random fan-made mod managers for games run better and are easier to use than every other piece of software on my computer, including the actual fucking operating system
Incredibly nice of toby fox to give me the birthday present of "deltarune tomorrow"
Ended up excitedly discussing how techniques for mitigating cache thrashing in Fenwick trees caused by power of two accesses are also used in many GPU algorithms with bunsenbitti while in line for an 18+ engineering panel.
Furry cons are *wild*
bsky/twitter/mastodon/whatever would be 1000000% better if I could assign a sticker to every post and have it be displayed to the left instead of my avatar.
I am so fucking tired of the knee-jerk reaction to "I don't like [X]" being "How can you not like [X]? You must be doing it wrong!!!"
I'm 36 years old now. It's still happening. I'm so fucking tired. I'm not doing it wrong. For the love of god just let me dislike things.
was trying to figure out what genre this song idea was and I abruptly realized that I accidentally wrote a theme song for some kind of tv show, but I'm pretty sure "title card opening sequence" isn't a genre
i would like muses to stop visiting me at 2 AM this is very inconvenient
