Just messing around with my phone's macro picture mode. Spring is just barely getting started here in northern MN.

I don't know who needs to hear this but "Gnome Tweaks" -> "Keyboard and Mouse" -> "Mouse" -> "Middle Click Paste" -> Toggle On

Edit: yes I actually know exactly who needs to hear this -- anyone who just upgraded to Fedora 44 and inherited new Gnome 50 defaults.

This was weird ... I was poking around for an interesting video to watch on youtube and found one with a interesting title. The video was about model airplanes, but nothing to do with the title. And I quickly saw it was entirely AI generated ... AI written script ... 40 minutes long ... AI voice ... with bunches of pictures apparently scammed from the web ... and then I found one that looked super familiar ... those are all my airplanes, but from like 15 years ago! Shout out to the Saint Paul/Mpls RC model airplane club. I did post that photo publicly ... back when it was cool to set up your own web page, your own domain name, and put stuff out there you thought was cool. Back when maybe a few people cared about stuff like that. Anyhow, super weird to see my picture in the middle of a 40 minute AI generated video.
P.S. I sold the red/white one long ago, but still have the purple, red/yellow, and blue/white airplanes in pretty much flyable condition.

@david_megginson I grew up with a sort of star trek view of the world ... that we were all trying our best to work towards a better future and most political disagreements were over how to get there, not so much where we were going. (And I also believed that we were generally moving in a positive direction.) Then the last 10-12 years happened ... and it forced me to realize your post is spot on.

@Aut@hachyderm.io I'm super curious if you come up with any other ideas. Neither I nor google gemini have thought of anything I like. Somehow a line depicting height above ground could be interesting, but that just collapses into a dot on a top down map, lol. My mind wanders to the old "elite" space combat video game that had a sort of orthographic view in combat, but my brain could never parse/leverage that very well in the heat of the moment so it's that's not feeling like the right way to go for me. https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/elite-dangerous/images/4/43/Sidewinder-Cockpit-Interface.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/1000?cb=20170605142211

@JohnOCFII @Aut Yes, sorry to hear that. When you are ready to think about it, consider sending in your application to Cirrus. I'm not directly connected to software development groups, but my sense is the software needs are never going to get fewer and cirrus does a variety of aviation related things. We have a customer facing app called Cirrus IQ and there are various software tools and things being developed for training programs. And I'm sure there are other forward looking software dev efforts going on from time to time to one degree or another. Coming from foreflight might perk up a few ears ... I'm projecting ... I don't know. I'm not in the hiring loop for anything, but if there was a nice day to come up for a visit I could give you a little tour of our production area, take you out to sample some of the fine local cuisine near the airport, and depending on your interests and experience maybe drop your resume on a desk somewhere interesting. I can't offer this same deal to the next 100 people, but happy to help out a little bit where/if I can. Probably you won't find the super interesting job that's exactly what you want posted ... but getting your resume in the system means it's there if a group starts sniffing around to see what kind of people they might be able to find out there with specific skills. I don't know though ... there's what I think cirrus should do, and then there is what cirrus actually does, and sometimes there is quite a gap, lol ... but I have never run a profitable business so what do I know.

@Aut @WiredForFlight I have a "nicegui" (python) based UAS operator station with moving map (open-street-map). Long ago I had a VRF chart layer working, but that source went away and I've never gotten around to tracking down a new source. For me I'm assuming a web connection (although the nicegui script runs local so you can run offline.) For another part of the project I've been pulling in bing satellite tiles and draping them over SRTM terrain for a fairly convincing 3d world view. Kinda like google earth from 15 years ago before they added 3d objects. I'm using a quad-tree LOD scheme and downloading data JIT and building the 3d tiles ... using python and panda3d. I think developing for tablets/phones is probably an entirely different world though. I'm probably too old school to learn how to do that lol. I'm happy running my python scripts on my linux laptop. :-) One of these days I wanted to work on a 3d flight visualizer with paths and stuff, but there's never enough time in the world and work and life has been kicking my butt for the past few months. https://youtu.be/WR6JeLOauIY https://youtu.be/d6G-cHO-uTU

@codebyjeff@hachyderm.io I am a software guy that works with a bunch of friken engineers. They all know how to build physical stuffs and know all the right things about defining the problem before picking the solution ... until it comes to software and then they forget everything. The solution magics it's way into existing somehow ... the solution that they are picturing (and not close to fully describing) will flow easily. And bonus, it will be easy because I'll be using the tool they already picked out for me to do the development with (that I've never seen before, but the youtube videos talk about how you can build all kinds of cool stuff with zero coding) and it should probably take about a week or two. We are an achievement based organization so ... results ... now!

@stepheneb Awe, that's fun. We had a german shepherd for a lot of years that loved to do this. I would take him jogging out to a stream as the turn around spot and throw the stick for him for a while. Then he'd want to bring the stick all the way home and we'd make a big pile in the front yard.

@iris@neuromatch.social I don't know if this is useful advice, but try getting involved with NOAA out of Honolulu or maybe East Coast somewhere? A bunch of years ago I had a once in a lifetime opportunity to go on a 16 day cruise out of Hawaii on NOAA ship 1000nm north up into the great pacific garbage patch to test drone survey techniques for hunting ocean debris. It was hard, trying to work on a rolling ship is difficult and I was at best 60% capacity the whole trip, trying not to puke, but it was an adventure and I learned a lot ... and gained a huge respect for the sea. So try to get on a funded research project that gets ship time ... ???? (me back before red caps meant something else .....)
