Hey #EnergyMastodon and #EnergyTwitter! Here's a quick #introduction to me: I'm a PhD candidate at the University of Oxford researching the impact of heat pump deployment on the electricity system in the UK and US. I focus on the spatial and grid planning aspects of this problem. During my PhD, I've become a bit of a map nerd and enjoyed communicating with policymakers and general audiences about my research. #Energy #heatpump #lgbtqinstem
Claire Halloran (they/them)
Energy systems engineering PhD candidate at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, MIT 2020. Fighting for rapid, just decarbonization. Spatial analysis of heat pump deployment and grid impacts. they/them 🏳️🌈
Great press release from the University of Oxford, Department of Engineering Science summarizing my recent work on the importance of heating flexibility. Heat pumps reduce carbon emissions and gas use compared to boilers, but they could also spike electricity demand. Flexibility is crucial to avoid frying the grid-- heat storage technologies, control systems, and incentives for households are all needed.

Just in time for the extreme cold hitting most of the US, I mapped how people across the US heat their homes: https://clairehalloran.github.io/us-state-heating.html
