Spooky Cherizilla 👻

Hooray! This week's #Monsterdon is Sting of Death, so let's look at some fun Jellyfish facts this week.🪼 Basics first. Jellyfish are soft, invertebrate animals, members of the phylum Cnidaria along with anemones and corals. Cnidarians are known for their stinging abilities. A typical jellyfish's jelly-like body (Mesoglea) is mostly water, sandwiched between two thin layers of living tissue. The bell-shape we think of as "a jellyfish" is called a Medusa, and it's just one phase of the jellyfish lifecycle. More facts later this week! 🧠

Okay, which one of you drives this car? #Monsterdon

Hey #Monsterdon, I've had a ball putting together bingo cards for you all, but I have some 'life stuff' going on, and it's time for me to step down. The bingo archive will stay up! If someone is interested in running #MonsterdonBingo, I'm happy to pass along my tools and tips. DM me. Or more casually - anyone can post cards to the hashtag at any time. As always, there are no rules. :) I'll still be around for Monsterdon, just not every week. Thanks for playing Bingo with me! ❤️ 🍿 #MonsterdonAlert

Did that guy just kick the ref in his jingly bits? #Monsterdon

What is #Monsterdon dinner for, if not revisiting the shitty nostalgia foods of my youth?

@trixter@retro.pizza Yeah, I think this campaign is in murder hobo territory.

@trixter@retro.pizza Oh my. I bet!

@diazona@techhub.social Good to know!

@diazona@techhub.social @Taweret@timeloop.cafe Drat! Do we need a new codename?

Nobody ever thinks about the head! 😆 #Monsterdon

I don't understand the pigeon noises. Is he embodying the spirit of New York City? Are we being punked? Was I hypnotized by windchimes? 😵‍💫 #Monsterdon

What is a micron of heat? Is that nonsense? What do I know. It sounds like nonsense tho. #Monsterdon

Hey #Monsterdon! Tonight's film is Sting of Death. Get in the mood with this soothing livestream from Monterey Bay Aquarium. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eQ_foBERmzA

Balancing my urge to make a Jellyfish man costume against my sure knowledge that putting a hefty bag over my head could kill me. #Monsterdon

Neat effect! #Monsterdon

I'm running late to #Monsterdon and will be living vicariously through the feed until we get to a TV.

Survival of the Shiftiest? 😆 We could use more plot but the dialog has its moments. #Monsterdon

Neat movement effects. #Monsterdon

Me: It's becoming a porno. P: Nah, it's just Italian. #Monsterdon

Scruffy the Janitor. #Monsterdon

Ok. Now I want cozy leg warmers. Not in those Ronald McDonald colors though. #Monsterdon

Look, Vincent. I said I'd stay here for ten grand. I never agreed to all these meetings. I'm going to bed. In a closet. With a gun and a bottle of wine. #Monsterdon

I love properly dressed sets. Everything looks real and lived in. #monsterdon

I'm rooting for Sting of Death this week. If it wins, I will post five fun Jellyfish facts! #Monsterdon

10,000 in 1959 is roughly equivalent to $113,000 today. #Monsterdon

@cherizilla@hypertext.monster Amazing. I forgot to turn off my scheduled back-up Bingo posts before migrating my account and they are STILL sending. 🤦‍♀️ Oh Gods I think I have these scheduled through the end of August. Ha. #Monsterdon

I arrived late. Has there been any plot yet? #Monsterdon

Dabo! #Monsterdon

There will be a fresh bingo card tonight. 👍 #Monsterdon

Hey #Monsterdon! Here's a bingo card for tonight's film: Wolfen 🍿 We have 75 bitey bingo squares ready for you to howl at. AWOO!🐺 Good luck, players! https://bingobaker.com/#6a5425d479ff786d #MonsterdonAlert #MonsterdonBingo

I have no idea what happened there. He smashed some bricks and the wolves said HECK YEAH MAN and flew out a skyscraper window? HUH 😆 #Monsterdon

Side note, do NOT pee on a Jellyfish sting! It won't help and may make it hurt more. Ideally, rinse with vinegar to deactivate the stinging cells and pull out any stuck stingers with tweezers. In a pinch, rinse with seawater and use something flat like the edge of a plastic credit card to pull stingers out. Touching them with fingers can make inactive stingers 'go off' in a secondary explosion of ouch. Fresh water can also set them off. #Monsterdon

Hey #Monsterdon! Please snag yourself a bingo card from the archive tonight. Have fun, and if you like, reply with what card you picked so others can follow your lead. 👍 Https://monsterdonbingo.neocities.org #monsterdonbingo #MonsterdonAlert

As a childfree weirdo, I am immune to being lured to my death by the sound of a crying infant. Mewling kittens, on the other hand.... Oh no. #Monsterdon

Check out this Jellyfish (Sea Nettle). The long, whispy parts hanging off the edge of the bell are tentacles, which contain stinging cells. And the long frilly part dangling from the center? They're "oral arms." Oral arms also have stinging cells, but they hang from the mouth, transporting food (planktonic animals and tiny crustaceans) from the water column up into the jelly's mouth. Their frilliness increases surface area for filtering food from the water. Some big jellies have looong tentacles. One lion's mane jelly was recorded at 120 feet in length 😱 That's as long as 3-4 school buses put end to end. Photo courtesy of Wikipedia. #Monsterdon

I love his stupid, translucent head! #Monsterdon

Tomorrow we watch Sting of Death. Today we marvel at Jellyfish life! 🤓 🪼 Jellyfish reproduction is wacky. They can reproduce sexually (spraying eggs and sperm around) or asexually (cloning) but for me the wildest bit is that after a baby polyp attaches to a surface it develops into a strobila, which is a chain or stack of teeny tiny jellyfish. When they are ready, they lift off the stack, one at a time, and start pulsing. Tiny ephedras! Then they hunt even tinier prey and grow bigger, into medusas. Well, the ones that aren't eaten up. A stack of babies? Wacky. Video of strobilation here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bcQs3dkrH0A #Monsterdon
