Many ACA enrollees, especially if they're self-employed w/highly variable incomes (ahem), don't know what their *actual* household income for the current year will be until Q4 or even until they actually file their taxes next spring. When you enroll in the ACA, you enter your *projected* income.

There's 364 other days of the year that he could criticize the Israeli *response* to Oct. 7th, some of which I would actually agree with. But choosing to do so ON Oct. 7th is pretty offensive. At least he publicly admitted that Hamas committed "horrific war crimes," anyway, so there's that.

This sucks, of course, but it's a known risk. The point is that Trump is sending $500 checks out to some people who DO ultimately end up qualifying for subsidies...and *isn't* sending them out to some people who DON'T ultimately end up qualifying. How do they know who will or won't?

Let's say you project your income to be around 390% FPL. If it ends up being that or lower, great! You keep the subsidies & maybe even get slightly higher ones when you file! If your income ends up over 400% FPL, though, you have to pay back every dime of federal subsidies when you file. Ouch!

UPDATE: The actual person I posted this in response to failed to actually answer my question so I eventually blocked them after giving them a half-dozen chances to do so. Others have chimed in with their responses, few of which actually answer the fucking question.

This also leads to another big question: The checks are supposedly being sent only to ACA enrollees who aren't eligible for subsidies...except that MANY ACA ENROLLEES WON'T KNOW FOR CERTAIN WHETHER THEY'RE ELIGIBLE OR NOT UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR.

I agree that they went overboard and have committed war crimes, as Hamas has. Tell me, however, what exactly SHOULD their response have been to over 1,200 Israelis being raped, tortured, murdered & burnt alive, and another 250 being kidnapped? Be specific. I'm all ears.

Well, it turns out there's some ADDITIONAL factors to consider here. For one thing, the math on who's actually getting the rebate checks doesn't seem to add up. SOME of the ~950K are people who earn less than 400% FPL but don't qualify for subsidies...but that actually flips the problem around: In Jan 2026 there appear to have been ~430K in that category, but only ~173K of them at most would be getting the checks. Whither the remaining ~257K?

IN SHORT: The $500 "rebate" scheme... --is almost exclusively going to red & swing states; --is selecting recipients via sloppy, arbitrary means; --only cancels out a small fraction of the economic damage caused by Trump to begin with; and... --is likely illegal anyway.
