I don’t compare a hot-dog to a pile of dog poo and say “it’s good food”. Then what is your definition of lightweight? A command line chat app? slow to load up literally loads within 3s long sync times maybe if you didn’t open it for a year yes, otherwise it’s in the sub-second area high battery drain for mobile users Mine is <1% for the last day. If you don’t setup proper push messaging which then requires the app to constantly wake up - yeah than it might be a problem. room concept, as opposed to contact chats How exactly is this a problem? electron app sucks Teams is also using Electron Microslop Edition options way too hard to find at times (like how to add existing rooms to a space) Just go into the settings and you will find 99% Moving a room to a space has nothing to do with options and is a very uncommon task. no online/offline status of contacts ok guess you last used Element 5+ years ago? github.com/matrix-org/…/3026 spec.matrix.org/v1.3/client-server-api/#presence patrick.cloke.us/posts/2023/…/matrix-presence/ trust model with device verification is unintuitive for non-techie users Yeah e.g. Whatsapp and Signal have the exact same problems expect when you keep some (sometimes not encrypted) backup somewhere.

Sorting is not ordering. What your are talking about is ordering. I agree that Element currently has no ordering and that is kind of a bummer, however when you use a messanger like apporach it’s fine because no one orders or sorts their WhatsApp/Signal/whatever conversations by name.

I assume we talk about the desktop client here. lightweight my brother in Christ, Discord and Teams both need like 2x the RAM so don’t talk to me about that. user-friendly Idk left side has contacts and groups, right side chat. What exactly is not user-friendly there?

Ok so if I'm reading this correctly: They migrated from an OS and MySQL version receiving no updates since at least 2 years to MySQL 8.0 which will stop getting updates in 4 days. Also every service is running without any containerization and there is a single database for everything... and it all runs on a single host and I didn't read one word about a backup strategy or disk encryption. Also not a single word about infrastructure as code like ansible so that you can reliably recreate the system... and The whole stuff is hosted in Germany for a Turkish software company - sounds like very good latency. My personal conclusion: This system WILL fail and the guy who designed it is stuck somewhere 10-20 years in the past.

At first: Stop posting Tomshardware! They just bulk repost ad-enriched low quality clickbait content without validating anything (cough 9700X3D). Just post the original video.

As the video creator said in it's disclaimer, the test is probably not accurate:

  • I'm having serious doubts about the test setup. The laptops are all on a carpet directly facing a wall. There is a 0% chance that this is using proper air circulation and this will likely effect heat dissipation.
  • Some tests (e.g. Video editing, Battery life) are extremly hardware dependent and shouldn't be used in a OS comparison.

How I imagine the decision: Should we maybe port it to Fairphone? The phone most of our users probably like? Nah let's do Motorola instead - you know the company were you have to spin a dice to determine if your device can unlock the bootloader or not...
