For those asking will someone be charged for OpenAI’s hack/hack: it’s an open question as to whether it reaches the level of a crime according to one expert and hints from the government

a friday afternoon surprise: NSW gov says OpenAI disclosed a "misalignment" by its AI agent and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water's National Parks and Wildlife web platform service. So, it sounds like a second Australian government 'hack'

Australian Federal Police and the Navy worked with the producers of NCIS:Sydney to "influence storylines and scripts", per an FOI I did, citing the show as an opportunity for recruitment and to avoid misrepresentation.

I've started as the ABC’s national AI tech reporter, after 5 unreal years at Crikey. AI is one of the biggest stories of our time. The sheer amount of money, influence and hype makes it ripe for critical, nuanced and accessible reporting.

Got a story about Aussies and AI? wilson.cameron@abc.net.au

Two years after the Prime Minister said he'd ban teens from social media, 80% of them are still on there. No policy is going to be perfect from the get go, but it's worth considering the time and effort put towards this instead of other reforms. https://theconversation.com/more-than-80-of-kids-still-using-social-media-despite-ban-new-esafety-report-finds-288808

The report provides more evidence Australia’s world-leading social media ban isn’t going to plan.

'We do not want to highlight this yet': AI data centre's FAQ slip-up

Data centre builder Firmus posted a statement, since removed, indicating its intention to get some of its cooling water from the state-owned irrigation system, adding "but we do not want to highlight this yet".

Most people don't know much about how journalism is done, typically because it's not public or isn't well explained. To help people out, I've put a simple guide to how I do reporting and what you can expect if you contact me. I hope this helps! https://cameronwilson.com.au/guide-to-my-reporting/

A guide to Cam Wilson’s reporting (v1.0) – @cameronwilson – cam wilson

I'm the ABC's national AI technology reporter. My job is to help inform the Australians about one of the most exciting, fast-moving and consequential stories of our time. A lot of people don't know much about how journalism is done. I don't blame them! A lot of it is done…

well wrap me in a flag and smear some vegemite on my face, i'm feeling bloody patriotic seeing global investors pouring money into Australian bonds because our economy is less vulnerable to AI disruption because we're dummies who can only dig things out of the ground and sign up for mortages

Scoop: Three months into Australia's ban, new data given to Crikey suggests that most teens who were on social media pre-ban are still on those platforms.

While it's just one data point, it adds to early evidence suggesting that there's widespread flouting of the ban.

Data provided to Crikey by parental monitoring company Qustodio shows usage among under-16s during the first three months of Australia's teen social media ban dropped only marginally more than the pre-ban seasonal dip.

NEW: Telstra was repeatedly warned by government and experts about the type of vulnerability that brought down its network. This morning, Telstra CEO Vicki Brady said this risk was "well-known" but didn't confirm if it had a back-up system or plan for this type of problem. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-07-10/telstra-warned-about-vulnerability-before-national-outage/106896906

NEW: The privacy regulator raised concerns Australia teen social media tech trial "overstated" how well these technologies protected people's privacy — especially since it didn't technically test the products' privacy protections or assess them against Australian privacy law.

i'm not as good as some at spotting AI writing, but it's funny how often I find myself immediately automatically skimming/skipping ahead of writing that i later find out is (suspected) AI slop. it just has a distinctive lack of grip that makes it slide across your eyeballs without being ingested.

i see a lot of people, frustrated with tech, wanting to "go analog" or give up on tech. i totally get it! a lot of tech we use right now sucks. but my 2026 wish/resolution is to put more energy towards figuring out how we can wrest control of tech from a powerful few and find ways to use it for good

We're now finding out that as many as 70,000 people had their government IDs provided to prove their ages leaked by Discord. Like I wrote last week, this is an inherent risk (and made greater by a rushed process) of getting platforms to do age checks

Exclusive: The Albanese government offered to pay pro-teen social media ban group 36 Months to promote policy.

Weeks before the ban began, 36 Months answered a selective departmental invitation to pitch "communications services" to promote the ban, but was unsuccessful.

interesting choice to project "LET THEM BE KIDS" onto the Sydney Harbour Bridge as part of the celebrations of the teen social media ban It's not a line that came from Albanese or the government — it's the name of News Corp's campaign for the ban.
