@elena Resisting AI feels like resisting gravity at this point, which doesn't leave me feeling hopeless: I'm not a coder, but I am a researcher and a writer, and my agency resides in doubling-down on my own critical-thinking skills, and frequently renewing my commitment to producing high-quality texts that no AI could replicate. Human-created content (code, literature, art, bouncy castles ~ whatever cultural artefact you can imagine) will survive the apocalypse.

@imalcolm@mastodon.social I haven’t used Library Thing for a long time so I’m not sure there. It seemed pretty clunky last time I was there. I’ve only just started looking into Open Library. One benefit so far is you can actually borrow books and read them on the site. I’m going to stick with Bookwyrm for social reviewing though. I don’t want to spread myself too thin with managing allllll the platforms.

@imalcolm@mastodon.social Also yes, put Goodreads in the bin.

@imalcolm@mastodon.social I do the same with sites like Bookwyrm! I treat these platforms as playgrounds for parsing half-baked ideas because expressing them somewhere is better than letting them just bounce around in my head. Sometimes they form into something coherent ~ then I throw them on the ever-growing half-baked-manuscript pile. And gradually, my understanding evolves. What else is writing for?

@imalcolm@mastodon.social You're welcome ~ thanks for confirming the name of Letterboxd, which I was trying to remember so I could log Perfect Days and look up some other Wenders films.

@grb090423@mastodon.social I want to watch allll the Wim Wenders now.

@paul@oldfriends.live “Now I gotta go to court, because I got robbed”!

@brewsterkahle@mastodon.archive.org It wasn't generative AI that I was using, but I agree with your new-drug analogy when it comes to knowledge-seeking and -synthesis. I just moved to @AskLumo@mastox.eu and asked it to help me learn Pali. Fifteen minutes later we had dropped grammar and were connecting Buddha's idea of the Ideal Ruler with Plato's ideal of the Philosopher King in poetic forms that legit 🤯 The dopamine highs are incredible!

@brewsterkahle@mastodon.archive.org Great post. I had a similar experience with Claude ~ I secured a freelance contract to typeset a book, which I haven't done professionally for 10+ years, and having Claude on-hand was like having a team of consultants helping me to navigate the backend/automation features of InDesign so I could deliver a professional and future-robost native InDesign file, and fast.
