What does digital independence look like for a #university?

At the University of #Groningen, this conversation has been growing bottom-up: academic & professional support staff are driving a move away from #BigTech toward shared, #open alternatives.

With support from the Uni Board, this effort is shaping a community-driven 5-year roadmap towards #DigitalAutonomy by 2030.

"Practice what you preach" was our motto when we at @Bibliothecaris@social.edu.nl left X for #Mastodon and switched to #PeerTube. And yet, we're a university library that's still on Instagram, because it's where students are.

In our workshop at @OSFNL@social.edu.nl, we shared how @Bibliothecaris@social.edu.nl and @oscgroningen@mastodon.social launched the ORA in 2020 and organize it annually.

Using a modified lottery instead of competitive ranking, the ORA aims to flip the script on academic competition - promoting open research while reducing bias and increasing diversity.
