Compsci grads facing recession-like job prospects thanks to AI - Slinging coffee and waiting tables ain't just for liberal arts grads any more, say Census Bureau economists “AI isn’t capable of taking any jobs away.”

Phishing / spam detection with local LLMs? I’ve tried giving screenshots of phishing emails to a local Qwen instance and so far it always correctly detected it as scam, even points out the exact elements that it based its judgement on. Sending screenshots to it ad-hoc isn’t too scalable for family and friends. I’d like to be able to either forward emails for screening, or perhaps have it screen everything from a mailbox. Has anyone done anything like this? Is there anything self-hostable that does this?

Corporations do not stand up to the government. Remember this. Drop any expectation that the coporate world would save you from a bad government.

Then she added one more layer of data — where people were getting help paying their electric bills each summer, from public programs or local organizations. An obvious pattern emerged. There were big clusters of dots collected in certain areas: lots of deaths, and little assistance. Those clusters turned out to be mobile home parks. Yup, the poor are first under the bus.

There’s likely pros. Not sure if the cons would be less. Has anyone not-oil&gas-funded made an analysis?

This is the intelligent non-invasive way to implement this. Basically using a similar cryptographic signing scheme as SSL certificates. We've known how to do this for decades.

I thought there was an effort to target a not-so-easy to change part of the virus. Maybe I've been dreaming. Either way the yearly shot, mRNA or otherwise is much more profitable so a one-and-done vaccine won't appear out of Moderna of Pfizer, that's for sure.

Anyone know much about the efficacy of the flu part of it? Says it's more effective than existing ones but is this the revolutionary flu shot that takes us out of the yearly flu vaccine rat race or not that far yet?

People who used AI tools for hints and clarification had a much easier time once the chatbot was removed when compared to those who used the bot to essentially prompt the answers.

Probably important for people who want to get some of the benefits of AI without paying the heavier costs. This reminds me of how I used Wolfram Alpha understand solving integrals in multivariate calculus. I paid for subscription that allowed viewing the steps it made to reach a solution. That helped me understand how the different strategies get applied in integration.

Am doing something related at work as we got the directive to actively use AI, so I might as well use the best model available, which happens to be very expensive. It's also not so smart for our work so I have to kick it multiple times... What can I do, it's part of my performance objectives now.

If they're unable to reopen the strait, perhaps they can force Trump to halt attacking Iran by stopping their own fossil fuel production. Something oil embargo.

In a capitalist market economy with a small public sector, that's definitely the expected outcome. In fact it would be worse than you describe. It'll produce big problems with the ability of the economy to consume its production since people rely on wages to buy that production. Wages that woild go away due to automation. In a mixed economy with a very large public sector, public co-ownership of large private firms, and 10% of the population (and growing) being members of the party that controls it all, the outcome may be different.

True but they can't escape the coming inflation wave. As fossil fuel supply thru the strait decreases, intl buyers would seek to buy from other sources, bidding up prices everywhere. That includes American producers who'd gladly export instead of feeding the domestic demand. This could change if the US gov't decides to move away from free markets and imoses export and price controls.

I had something similar when I used to mount an NFS share. I had a bash line that would loop ping and then mount once ping succeeds. Having a separate service that pings and making the mount dependent on it is probably the better thing to do. Should also work when put in Requires= in a .mount file.

Could be the USB controller. I've had pretty terrible USB problems with certain AMD systems. Typically only with high-bandwidth applications, but I know some people have had problems even with peripherals like mice.

Not necessarily Big Tech's AI, but "a program" that can automate this part of the PR process. I'm not interested in a program that gives pointless or bad suggestions. I'm interested in a program that can spot pattern X which I always say "this is bad because Y" and print that for me. If it were easy to write a classic program to do this, I would have written it. If that's easy with LLMs, I'd train my local Qwen or whatever to do it. Not a faceless corpo that runs this on gas turbines, poisoning people around them and lying to me abt how much it costs me.

I use Home Assistant (running on Yellow) with ZigBee, Matter/Thread and Z-Wave. If I had to start today, I'd get a Pi 4/5 and Home Assistant ZBT-2. I would not run anything else on the Pi. Let HA OS take it over to ensure smooth updates. Then I'd add ZWA-2 if I need Z-Wave. Not you'd need 2x ZBT-2 if you want both ZigBee and Matter/Thread.

I’m not saying Zitron’s right but one easy way that his predictions could be wrong at this point but could emerge as correct in the future is basically the principle “the market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent.” In other words things could have been crazy 2 years ago but they maybe crazier now, and they may have yet more room to get astronomically crazy.

Certainly. Don’t know how large and when, but a significant (relative to our size) bunch of people would likely show up. That plus people who dabble in both would increase their activity here. The threadiverse is more or less guaranteed to grow and form a solid contrubutor base. We don’t seek to increase profits YoY so our services are only going to get better over time. For-profit socials have to grow profits over time, so they are going to get worse. Increase in service quality for for-profit platforms is a temporary stage of their development. The threadiverse will be around in 5-10 years time, in some shape or form and it’ll be larger and better than it is today. This is why I keep pushing the vote buttons and type words every day. Deliberately spending more time than I’d like. 😄

Another vote for Immich. Running it with docker compose is trivial. Been using it for 2 years now and it’s been glorious. Running it without docker would take more setup, not sure how complex.

Organize action on what works. DCs work. Given how much overlap there is between DCs and climate, latch on DCs action without doing Uhm Akshually about climate. It already contributes to that goal. No need to inject a less useful uberpropagandized dimension to it.
