It's the one-year anniversary of the anti-trans supreme court ruling today. If you're a cisgender woman, please read this open letter and sign. They have 200 sigs to go to get to their goal of 100,000 on the anniversary.
If you can't sign, like me, please share if you can 💜

@cstross@wandering.shop Anyone trying to spin "Muslims voting for a woman in a party led by a gay Jewish man" (quote taken from elsewhere) as evidence of a Muslim conspiracy deserves every hard time they get.
Today I learned that the green and white swirly arrow doesn’t mean “recyclable”, it means “paid into recycling scheme”. That feels misleading to me.

@zebulonmysterioso@mas.to @cstross@wandering.shop I'm glad you said that, I thought it was just me getting Thatcher vibes from the first one. Definitely makes it scarier.
“A single-payer universal #health care system could cover every American, save more than 100,000 lives a year, and still cost $1 trillion less than the system it would replace, according to a new preprint study led by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health.”

@leighelse@mastodon.nz When all you have is a hammer…
(Every problem looks like hours of fun!)
Probably no use to man nor beast, but figured I should offer it - I was clearing out the other day and came across an old Orange branded SIM backup device, for when texts and contacts were all on the SIM. Any takers? #technology #oldtech

@cstross@wandering.shop @bjn@mstdn.social @lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org Well, ideally, yes. But I'm not a perfectionist, no need to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Areas densely populated by black bears would work just as well. Or even polar bears, if we're going for neutral territory to avoid favouritism.

@bjn@mstdn.social @cstross@wandering.shop @lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org It's not, but I'm starting to think that the proponents of "stop vaccinating, natural selection!" should be left in a wilderness area for a week or two, on their own, with whatever tools they can make. Natural selection, right?
I see a number of posts from people looking to #getfedihired - has that actually worked for anyone?

@angusm Time to go get an "internet in a box" ... box.
(Yeah, couldn't figure out a good way to end that.)

@monkeyben@mastodon.sdf.org @Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I’m actually thinking maybe doubling the fine each time, for something like this (Bezos and trees he shouldn’t have). He’ll happily ignore the first $1000, even maybe the first year up to two million. Midway through the second year, when it’s up to $131 million, he might notice. End of year two, at $8 billion, I’m sure he would.
Replying to
@monkeyben@mastodon.sdf.org @Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange Yeah, that’s the thing with absolute fines, past a certain point people just don’t notice them. One advantage the GDPR has, for any other faults.
@gcluley@mastodon.green Just wanted to say hi - there's no way on earth you'll remember me but I still have a pair of Dr Solomon socks that you sent me, many years ago. 😃 It's good to see you're still around.

@Dianora@ottawa.place @profcarroll@federate.social Wow, there’s a name I hadn’t heard for quite some time.
"VVIQ Questionnaire:
Your score of 36 places you at approximately the 7th percentile of the population.
[...]
You have a vivid visual imagination, known as phantasia. This indicates an average to above-average ability to visualize mental images. When you picture something in your mind, you can "see it" with a reasonable level of clarity and detail."
Yeah. I really don't think they've connected up the score and the text there very well.

@afeinman ah - yeah, I can see the number of people you’d be able to hire would be kind of limited. :)
Replying to
@afeinman Interesting. I was kind of hoping for a flood of people telling me they’d found jobs, and so far you’re the first person to reply. It doesn’t sound encouraging. :-)
(For completeness, what kind of work do you offer, if I may ask?)

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social Similar to the scene at the moment, where people are working on adding PQC to DRM systems.
Let me tell you, if I’ve got a functioning QC able to break RSA keys, stealing Netflix content from a stream is pretty low on my list of things to do.

@parismarx@mastodon.online I think I just looked at the list of providers on their site, https://nextcloud.com/partners/ - apparently long enough ago to forget TheGood.Cloud are Dutch, not Swiss. My mistake. 🙈
As far as I recall I tried one of the ones with a Platinum partner badge, reasoning they’d probably know the most. Only tried the one so I can’t vouch for the rest.
Replying to
@parismarx@mastodon.online I came here to recommend some of the NextCloud hosting providers - in particular I use TheGood.Cloud, Switzerland based. (I realise being Swiss isn't magic, but their values seem pretty solid anyway.)

@glassbottommeg I’ve wishlisted :) One note - do you have any control over the minimum requirements text? “RX 460” doesn’t help me as a graphics requirement, maybe some kind of benchmark figure would be better? 🙂
I’ve got an #xboxone (2013) which beeps on, then turns straight back off again. One thing to test is apparently the PSU, but I can’t find a real one to use (the one I bought on Amazon weighed virtually nothing, can’t have been safe).
Anyone know of a source of real Xbox One PSUs?

@dark_stang Don’t be silly, it’s only a ban for plebs. Companies can still do whatever they want. It just costs a minor fine…
Replying to
@Maitre Yeah, I'm kind of looking too which is why I'm curious. Still in the "what do I want to do next" phase right now though. :)

@glassbottommeg Oh, okay. I was naively thinking “run benchmark, compare number,” but I’ll take your word for it that it doesn’t work.
If you’ll excuse me I have to go figure out what graphics chipset I have…
