A12 Zevenaar: Omdat het niet anders kan / Because there is no other way

Because this system is destroying the world, we took to the streets again, alongside Extinction Rebellion and Utrecht4Palestine, who jointly organized this A12 blockade. We succeeded in blocking the A12 and the road leading to it and in getting our message across. Stop the billions in fossil fuel subsidies, stop injustice, stop genocide, stop oppression! During the demonstration, we witnessed a painful example of speciesism in the police’s actions.
Emergency services: for whom?
During a blockade, we always let emergency services through—this has never gone wrong. On Saturday, the police also blocked the intersection where we were standing with vans, but had to clear the way whenever an emergency vehicle came by. It hurts us to see that the police distinguish between ambulances for people and those for (domestic) animals. Why wasn’t the animal ambulance allowed through? And, why isn’t there actually an ambulance for animals in the “livestock” industry? They more often than not suffer from harrowing injuries.

This is speciesism
This is a practical example of speciesism—discrimination based on species. It is one of the excesses of the current oppressive system, in which everything revolves around production and (the unfair distribution of) money. It is the same system that justifies many abuses, including the genocide in Palestine, the arms trade, polluting industries, and the unjust consequences of climate disasters.
We’ll keep coming back
In short: there can be no livable planet with fossil fuels and animal suffering. As long as politicians and the government continue to ignore this message, we’ll keep coming back—to places where we’re seen and heard, like the A12. The police’s heavy-handed tactics, the use of police dogs (!!) and attempts to create a “chilling effect” won’t stop us.
We wish it weren’t necessary, but unfortunately, it is.
