10 pages into Fall by Neal Stephenson: hmm maybe he's lost the plot on what I personally want from his writing

I'm currently like 200-300 ish pages in and actually this is in several ways tailor made to my interests??

15.5 hours later, the shirt I made is wearable! Only thing left is maybe adding a pocket. I learned a lot about construction and am happy with how it came out!

pattern: https://helensclosetpatterns.com/, Cameron
fabric: https://graylinelinen.com/, bought in person in NYC circa 2018
buttons: https://www.decousuca.com/
workshop: https://rosewood-stitches.square.site/

If you're wondering why I've been packing the car for the last two hours: we simply cannot go on a two day camping trip that's 35 minutes away without bringing at least seven musical instruments and four swords

Learned how to sew a buttonhole on a sewing machine today! Reading the manual helped a lot. I made 5 test ones on my scrap fabric and then 8 real ones on my shirt. I am about 14 hours into shirt construction and only the button attachment, hole opening, and pocket attachment are left.

I've just ordered a certified translation of a Latin text. It's 2026 so this can be done fully online

happy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Non-Binary_People%27s_Day

still here, still nonbinary in a persistent way, still think the placement of this day on the calendar exactly between women's and men's days is a nonbinary-phobic concession to the limitations of the gender binary on people's thinking.

made another T-shirt today! I think it's worse than the first one but this is the placement that worked with the fabric I had left. Which is better?

me in 2016, receiving a red stapler from my employer upon reaching a 1-yr anniversary*
me in 2026, stapling several pages together with it for the first time in years

* yes I have seen Office Space. No that doesn't make it appropriate as a gift

@stylus@social.afront.org I haven't lived in NYC for a bit but I agree it looks safe

Bonus tips to consider for NYC interactions:

• Walk with purpose
• Don't look at strangers too long
• If a stranger looks at you too long, you can look angry or blank at them (think "resting bitch face")
• If someone on the street is asking you for something, say "sorry, can't help you", keep walking, do not slow down (use judiciously)
• If you choose to sit on the train next to the door in touristy parts of Manhattan, keep a close hand on your possessions (wallet, bag, phone), don't use laptop
• Don't ask strangers to watch things for you
• If you're waiting for the train and a car is completely empty at a normal time of day / not at the end of the line, do not enter that car, walk to the next one over. There's a reason it's empty.
• If someone on the train is yelling about you/at you ignore it. don't escalate.
• Let people exit the train before you enter it, stand to the side of the door to wait

I love NYC! have a great time!

please tell the fruit scientists to start working on an apple with no core next. after that they should make a very large grape

excited to report that my merino wool shrunk by only 3" across the entire fabric width (about 55-60"?) when I machine washed a strip in a delicates bag on cold. Which is good enough that I threw the next chunk in the machine similarly as pre-treatment before I cut and sew.

ok so I did just watch the "game changer" episode of "parlor room", where they play the currently on kickstarter board game. and my opinion is, I don't think I want to play this game, it's not that different and special than other party games. But they were joking about doing expansions. If this is the original flavor game, what I want to play is the "Thirsty Sword Lesbians" flavored expansion.

I'm still trying to keep up my French and so I watched https://www.onf.ca/film/les-perdants/ tonight. It was OK. Lots of fast speaking with Quebec accents, so a difficult practice. The stock footage was a bit too much I think and I didn't think it said as much about the topic as I wanted to learn (though my comprehension was probably not 100%)

read another book! https://app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/aa24fcac-d833-4927-b155-d1bb8d2f8adb?redirect=true

I am looking for feminist/antiracist/etc writing on the topic of: what should a code of conduct say and do about violations that occur outside the designated space boundaries? (e.g. harassment that occurs outside a conference but both parties are attending)

I have an opinion on this personally that is informed by over a decade working in tech and going to makerspaces. But I would like to see what others think / what I am missing / if there is something to point to that is meaningfully more concretely written down and authoritatively framed than my own opinion.

I wonder if there is some way to crosspost my book reviews without having to create a new account. https://app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/fbde9dcf-399d-4f60-b7de-690786cbd109
