This little spring ran in a short ochre smear to the Limb Brook, a stream which itself joins the River Sheaf. Both the Brook and the Sheaf used to be boundaries for the early medieval kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria.
'Sheaf' itself is from the Old English sceað, 'boundary, border'. sceað feld (sheaf-feld) being the border fields. Another reason Sheffield is what it is.

This effect is often seen near old mines, but there aren't any marked out in the area so it could well natural (or just Old-old - this area has evidence of neolithic and iron age habitation, and was then worked from the medieval period on). There is a shallow coal seam running through the area, because of course there is - coal and iron ore are the reason Sheffield is what it is, after all.
I am a little concerned I'm on a slow walk into a depressive valley, and really who could be surprised?
I am increasingly concerned that the way I've managed to not be depressed for a decent chunk of time is by simply Not Thinking About all the things in my life which could depress me. Which doesn't feel healthy? So maybe depression coming, but maybe it's time?
OTOH maybe it's just an effect of the cytokine cascade induced by this viral infection.
