then try this:

bridged to bluesky:
'whale calves are born tail-first, rather than head-first like other mammals. However, while newborn sperm whales become talented swimmers within a few hours, they still sink right after birth. So other whales have to lift the calf up “to prevent the newborn from sinking while also facilitating its first breaths'
Two small things to help make the world a little better, for folks who already try:
RSPB urging people to take away their bird feeders because of the risk of spreading avian flu (and other diseases) - something a lot of people do to try to help bird populations. It's nuanced, so look into their advice.
Marine Conservation Society asking people to stop eating mackerel and cod as the populations are crashing - mackerel having long been one of the more sustainable choices for flesh eaters.

Mountains and stars hot off the press from this morning... looking a bit plain but leaving room for text to be added later and an overlay including foxy above. Made this by going at the zinc plate with a screwdriver to get the jittery angry lines on the mountain edges.
The rest of the day was mistake after mistake after mistake, with many things learned.

Second job which took the rest of the day, was a 20 step process on my first A2 plate. I've never done etchings over about A4 so this was a lot of trial and mostly error. It is a technical feat in its own right to do big plates and physically demanding. No idea how it'll print and I can only see the problems...

@clew@ecoevo.social might be worth a try for wood engraving for printmaking... that uses end grain so you only need small lengths (type height usually), but if the wood works for that and they can be sanded really really smooth then they can sell for a surprising amount of money

@futurebird@sauropods.win there are swarms of ants in it actually, now I think about it, as one of the bad things that happen to the wasps... we made it quite a long time ago now but it was one of my favourite projects :)

@tartanroots@mastodon.scot looks like they're saying to essentially stop for summer, maybe just a bit of scatter feeding mealworms etc if you want to, but cleaning them the rest of the time I know is a good thing. Virkon is full on! Never heard of anyone using it outside labs :) I used to use it when I worked on amphibian viruses to disinfect everything in between pond visits.
