If you’re working in the Linux console alone, you could also ssh into your Pi and, for instance, have your local machine on virtual console tty1 and the Pi on tty2, switching between them with ALT+F*x*. Still only one monitor. 😜

I don’t know all this fancy stuff. Like, yesterday, I wanted to listen to the songs from the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya so I grabbed them from nyaa, moved them from the “Downloads” directory to the “Music” directory and then played it with VLC.🤷‍♀️

Sorry for the late response! Oh NO 🤣 I did successully install Gentoo once and I see the benefits. I really do. BUT. My brain works in such a way, that I need to understand every single USE flag, otherwise I “can’t” install packages 😭 I simply can’t allow myself to do a… “as is” installation with Gentoo… And I don’t have to motivation right now to learn EVERYTHING I’d have to learn xD Sorry, short answer: yes, later xD

How do you vet executables? I have found some software on 1337 that a friend was asking for. It’s for Windows and I’m on Linux. Is test running the software inside a VM the only way to securely vet it (to see what connections it tries to make and what processes it starts)? On VirusTotal, I get one positive and 66 negatives. Preferably, I’d like to hand over the software without worrying about giving them malicious code…

I’d try to stay away from isolated projects on GitHub that only have a single maintainer, to avoid the risk of installing malware. You could check the https://aur.archlinux.org/ to see if any of those have been uploaded here and if there are any comments on the package. If there are none but you still would like to install, check out this guide to learn how to vet the “installer”.

How do you remove any trailing characters from a variable in bash? I am digitizing my dad’s video and audio tapes, for which I - after painstakingly scouring the documentation of ffmpeg, as one should - finally have found the encoding options that I’m happy with. :D But instead of retyping the PhD dissertation that are the ffmpeg commands that I use a bazillion times, I have simply started to do command substitution with for instance $(cat command_ffmpeg_COPYCODEC) or $(cat command_ffmpeg_H264) and the likes. This, however, still requires me to vim the correct filenames into these concatenated commands every time I work on a new project, so I thought, “Why not just set a variable, like I use to do with visudo as in EDITOR=/bin/vim visudo So, wanting to do a little ffmpeg magic to delay the audio stream of a file, I tried FILENAME='birthday_0' $(cat command_ffmpeg_SYNCAUD) but bash said, “no, who do you think you are?” After doing a wc on FILENAME, I noticed that there is an invisible trailing something after the filename - possibly some whitespace char - since it thinks that I mean to use an option “-synced.mkv”. How would you go about writing the now bash script (it simply wouldn’t expand the variable through command substitution…) so that the trailing whatever is deleted, if that is indeed the case? I have tried slapping " “, ' ‘, ( ), { } in all conceivable configurations, but I’m simply to inexperienced. xD Please advise! 🛠️

[artix/open-rc/iptables] Why did I have to manually load the ip_tables module? I was setting IP iptables like I have done a billion times before, but when trying to /etc/init.d/iptables save, it said that the kernel doesn’t have support for it. Wut? So I load it with modprobe, only to lose it after a reboot, so I shoved it into modules in mkinitcpio.conf, which seems to have helped. What’s going on? Are we forcibly moving on to nftables?

What video file sizes do you guys download and why? I don’t know about sizes, but I stick to 1080p remuxes, because I have brain damage that makes my anus itch just by knowing if and when the video has been re-encoded to save space. Also the blacks. :) And what is the correlation between video size and quality? The only correlation might be the size to objective quality, which isn’t what you as a consumer is after anyway, unless you’re a data hoarder or the likes. You’re after the subjective quality: See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_quality Who are y’alls downloading 20+GB movies? Are you storing all that or are you downmixing? Are you stealing your harddrives out of the recycle bin? Nope, I’m just lucky to have an extremely narrow field of interest (no, it’s not *Human Centipede). I’m financially hard locked to the 15TB that I spent four years aggregating before LLM data centers fcked us.

Ultimately, judge your own risk tolerance by how much you trust the source, how much you want the software, what kind of systems protection you have in place (antivirus, antimalware, permissions control, backups), and how much you can afford to have your system compromised. Thanks for this! I finally decided to hand the matter over to my friend, because vetting the binaries are just… a whole project on(in?) its own. I sent them exactly what you wrote, in addition to some concrete guidance on how to setup VMs, create backups, bootable media, whathaveyou.

Oh shiet… well, I pray my 5800X3D survives a little longer. I’d hate to upgrade in this economy D: … I’ve had it since it came out, I think. I did have some random reboots, but that was with one of its newer (?) relatives, an AMD Ryzen 7 5700G with Radeon Graphics. And I believe it was because it had ran out of RAM and SWAP or the like… ALSO LOOK: https://www.wanture.com/tech/amd-ryzen-7-5800x3d-am4-relaunch-q2/ I just happened to come across this now. How many years later and the re-release it?! xD Hilarious…

open the files without them having any chance of interent conention and cant see other files Use a VM and don’t give it internet connectivity. I use Tuta because Proton has grown too big for my taste. What do you mean it doesn’t work with Tor? Tor is supposed to be your network layer foundation of your connection and shouldn’t have to do with what applications you run on top of it. And just to clarify: Simple Login is not an e-mail provider. It’s an e-mail alias provider.

If you’re only talking about the download process, and you are downloading at home, then a trustworthy VPN is the (only?) way to go. I’d look into Mullvad or IVPN. If you are also talking about other processes surrounding downloading, such as registration, creating accounts, communicating with people over the Internet, use fake names ( https://www.scifiideas.com/cyberpunk-name-generator/ ), e-mail aliases ( https://simplelogin.io/ ) and respectable DNS providers ( https://quad9.net/ ).
