Recently I've been porting the #Unisoc ISP to #libcamera. AF is not supported yet, so I have to move the lens manually using v4l2-ctl. But debayering, AGC/AEC, AWB and color correction are already working.

It would be nice if an open-source firmware could also act as a hardware abstraction layer for different SoCs from different manufacturers. AFAIK MediaTek SoCs have similar ARM-based coprocessors implementing a similar set of features. As an experiment, I decided to make a simple firmware that can boot on such coprocessors and communicate with the main CPU using virtio. I've been working on a prototype and am planning to publish it soon. 3/4

Of course, making this a real alternative would still require a lot of work and collaboration. Is there any demand for this in the #MobileLinux #mainlining community and would anyone be interested in porting it to their own hardware? A lot of us could benefit from a joined effort like this, especially if this means that kernel drivers only need to be written once and vendor-specific differences can be abstracted away or removed entirely. 4/4

@fabrice Display, GPU, camera (still WIP), and a lot of basic hardware features like battery charging work without firmware blobs. WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS work with proprietary firmware, but WiFi support is incomplete and sometimes a bit broken. The modem works too (even with VoLTE). Audio is a bit more complicated, as part of the stack runs on an undocumented DSP architecture. Call audio does not always work. Sensors, AGPS and HW-accelerated video encoding/decoding are not supported yet.

@SciSnail @libcamera No, the hardware ISP can only measure how sharp the picture is. The autofocus algorithm has to be implemented in software.

@rolandlo @fabrice Perhaps you could try porting the modem to ModemManager. That should be relatively easy given that it uses AT commands like most other modems. I have been avoiding ModemManager due to its GObject coding style, but all Gnome-based UIs use it. Note that you can also try SailfishOS with the mainline kernel, which works somewhat better than postmarketOS: https://forum.sailfishos.org/t/mainline-linux-kernel-for-the-jolla-c2/21382/5
To get the camera working on pmOS, apply the patches on top of 0.5.2 like this: https://storage.abscue.de/private/zImage/pmaports-libcamera.tar.gz
